This month, we spoke to Tim Bourke from Derrymore in south-east Queensland. Tim has been a customer of Specialist Sales for more than 10 years!

Tim is located at Derrymore in south-east Queensland where he operates a small cattle backgrounding business where he gets steers up to feed-on weight.

What do you love most about living in a rural area/community?

It’s what we’ve always done, I’ve come from a rural background, always worked in rural areas. My father was a cattle buyer and we've always been involved in the beef industry. I’ve usually had to work off the farm to supplement my on farm income until retiring.

Tim now works full time on the farm.

What’s the most challenging part of living on the land?

Continuity of rainfall and the rising costs of doing business in the rural sector. The price of inputs continues to rise compared to what we receive when we sell our cattle.

What are the handy products you rely on?

Hatchet, Militia Metsulfuron, Eurochem Penetrant and cattle products like CattlePro, TickPro & Bomectin Injectable.

How do you manage the unpredictable weather conditions?

Stocking rates are a big consideration in everything we do and reclaiming ground infested with invasive weeds.

Have there been any recent technological developments that you’ve implemented on your farm?

Apps to maintain currency in cattle marketing and weed control. To get the most up-to-date information, I always check the weather, prices on the MLA site and newspapers etc. I really value Cameron’s specific advice on weed control and of course, I regularly check the Specialist Sales website for any offers and label information!

Where can we find you on the weekend/what are your favourite things to do outside of work

Watching the mighty Cowboys, camp drafting and spraying lantana!
