Whittet Kikuyu Seed (agriCOTE Enhanced) KIKUYU-SEED-AGRICOTE Barenbrug

Description

Whittet Kikuyu is a deep rooted self repairing perennial grass. It forms a dense turf and spreads by stolons, which creep both above and below the soil surface. It is predominantly spring summer active with a very small amount of winter growth. It is used either as a stand alone turf option in turf blends with Tall fescue or Ryegrass. It is extremely hardy and can tolerate high levels of traffic.

Known for its hardiness and aggressive runners- Kikuyu is a popular choice for homeowners, sporting fields and larger areas like airports.  The best time for sowing is late spring to late summer, as long as your temperature is within the optimum temperatures of 18-29°C, you can expect germination.

Whittet Kikuyu was first developed back in 1970 with the planting of the first crop.

Whittet was developed to spread more vigorously than common strains of Kikuyu that had been introduced to Australia from Africa in 1919.

Kikuyu grass is a low growing, warm season vigorous grass that spreads by stolons & rhizomes. Whittet, Improved Kikuyu grass (Pennisetum clandestinum) is a popular choice for Turf Managers throughout Australia when choosing a seeded variety.

Whittet has a medium texture, robust turf density & will establish & persist better on poor soils with low fertility.

What Is Agricote Enhanced Whittet Kikuyu Seed?

AgriCote is a tailored seed coating treatment applied to Whittet Kikuyu that conveniently combines all the AgriCote technologies into one high performing seed coat.  Starting with the highest quality kikuyu seed available, an advanced binding and protective polymers with lime is added as the basis for this cutting-edge seed coating technology. The polymer formulation enables the seed to be coated evenly, which makes it easier to work with and promotes a more even seed distribution onto the. In addition, the lime helps to optimise the pH level immediately around the germinating seed, which promotes faster moisture uptake by the seed and better establishment.

AgriCote treatments include nutrients designed to be immediately available to the seedling, protection against fungal diseases through a fungicide treatment and insecticidal treatments to provide protection from biting and sucking insects. AgriCote is designed to enhance seedling establishment by delivering improved early seedling vigour and root development, through the inclusion of growth promoting and dormancy breaking technologies.

    Reseeding flooded lawn

    John Hocking (verified owner)

We recently lost our lawn due to the 2022/23 flood. With summer approaching, decided to reseed with Kikuyu seed.
Tried local lawn seed suppliers only to be told they had none in stock and it is difficult to source.
Went online and Specialist Sales had to product in stock at a competitive price. Ordered online and product was sent in a very timely fashion. We received it very quickly. Seed has germinated after 2 weeks. Very happy.

Hi Daniel and thanks for your review. There are some important planting tips that will affect the germination of warm-season grasses such as Kikuyu.
1 – Plant into a seedbed of soft topsoil or sandy loam. The best seedbed guarantees the best germination.
2 – Broadcast the seed at, or very near, the soil surface and incorporate lightly with raking. Small seeds required good seed to soil contact to germinate.
3 – Best coverage and reduced seed wastage is achieved by using a seed spreader for the size of the area.
4 – Soil must remain damp throughout the germination period and must be maintained for at least 1-2 weeks after sowing, through irrigation or natural rainfall. Seed laying on top of the soil has minimal seed to soil contact and is more susceptible to false germination and death.
5 – A warm, rising soil temperature is necessary to get Kikuyu to germinate. A soil temperature of 20degrees and rising is recommended.
As you indicated you have just thrown the seed onto bare, unprepared soil and relied on natural rain events for germination, this is likely to affect the germination results. The soil temperatures in Victoria during October are also lower end for quick germination so the process is likely to take a bit longer than you expected.

Maintenance

  • Mowing heights are recommended at 25-50mm.
  • Frequent mowing will keep thatch build-up to a reasonable level.
  • It is essential for best results to maintain adequate moisture in  the seed bed.
  • Kikuyu grass is a deep-rooted perennial that spreads by rhizomes and stolons. It forms a low growing turf that is cold tolerant and can be grown from Northern Queensland to Tasmania.
  • For best performance it needs more than 900mm of annual rainfall and will respond well to fertilisers. Too much fertilising can, however, create a significant thatch layer resulting in spongy turf.
  • Whittet kikuyu is a taller variety with broader leaves and thicker stems, which persists well under low fertility.
  • Kikuyu is a tough, drought tolerant grass that needs to be sown when summer temperatures reach 25-35 degrees.
