Roundup Biactive Herbicide (Glyphosate) ROUNDUP-BIACTIVE Bayer CropScience

Description

What is the active ingredient in Roundup weedkiller?

Roundup Biactive Herbicide is formulated with glyphosate, a broad-spectrum systemic herbicide and crop desiccant. This organophosphorus compound, classified as a phosphonate, functions by blocking the plant enzyme 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase, effectively inhibiting its activity.

Where can Roundup Biactive Herbicide be used?

Roundup weedkiller can be used in the following settings:

  • Gardens
  • Factories
  • Roads
  • Cemeteries
  • Gravel pathways
  • Car parks
  • Industrial buildings
  • Industrial premises
  • Municipal grounds
  • Outdoor parks
  • Railways
  • Airport runways
  • Commercial buildings

What is the general mixing rate of Roundup Biactive Herbicide?

The general mixing rate is 10mL of Roundup to every 1L of water. Refer to the Product Label for detailed advice based on your circumstances.

How long does Roundup Herbicide take to work?

It generally takes 2-7 days after spraying to start working on target annual species, and 2-3 weeks for perennial species. Signs that Roundup is working as intended include yellowing and wilting of the plant, which will eventually progress to browning, and finally, total plant death. Cool and cloudy weather conditions may delay noticeable chemical activity by a few days or weeks depending on the plant species.

Safety advice for using Roundup Herbicide

Roundup may irritate the eyes and skin, so always avoid contact with these areas. While getting the product ready for application, ensure you wear elbow-length PVC gloves along with a face shield or goggles. Once finished and prior to eating, drinking, or smoking, cleanse your hands, arms, and face thoroughly with soap and water. At the end of each day, clean any contaminated clothing, gloves, and face shield or goggles. When using a controlled droplet applicator, wear protective waterproof clothing and impervious footwear.

Is Roundup Herbicide safe for pets?

Pets may be at risk if they make contact with or eat plants that are still wet with Roundup. In domestic situations, it is best practice to remove pets from the area while the spray is wet. However, once it is dry, they can return to the area – we advise waiting 24 hours to ensure the safety of your pets.

Directions Of Use

For the complete directions of use for Roundup Biactive Herbicide, click here

Roundup application rates and tips

General use

  • The general use rate for Roundup when applied with a domestic or garden pressure sprayer is 10mL per every 1L of water.
  • 20L of Roundup will equate to approximately 2,000L of glyphosate spray mix when the general mixing ratio is used.

High-volume applications

  • For high-volume applications using a knapsack sprayer or handgun equipment, the dilution rate is provided as volume/1L of water – for example, 10mL of Roundup Biactive Herbicide per 1L of water.
  • When using a high-volume sprayer, adjust the equipment to achieve an even spray pattern, and ensure application is thorough and uniform so all target foliage is adequately wet.

Low-volume applications

  • For low-volume applications, such as with a gas or splatter gun, the dilution rate is given as a ratio of 1:9, indicating 1 part of Roundup Biactive should be mixed with 9 parts water.
  • This can be converted to a metric measurement – for example, 10mL of Roundup to 90mL of water.
  • Always apply as an even spray to guarantee uniform coverage across all foliage.

Mixing instructions:

  • Make sure the tank is clean and any residue from previous usage has been removed.
  •  Fill the tank halfway with clean water. Remember, using water with soil particles or hard water with calcium salts may cause efficacy problems. Glyphosate can become ineffective when mixed with water tainted by clay or soil.
  • Add the appropriate amount of Roundup Herbicide, which can be calculated following the directions for use table on the Product Label.
  • Mix well, keeping the filling hose below the surface of the water to avoid foaming.
  • Add water to fill the vat.
  • Remove the hose from the tank as soon as it is full to prevent back-siphoning.

Application method: Low volume application via a gas gun or splatter gun. Apply as an even spray to cover all foliage.

Adding surfactants and penetrants to Roundup

The addition of surfactants or penetrants may enhance the weed control provided by Roundup Biactive Herbicide.

Surfactants

Suggested surfactant rates are 200ml to every 100L of 1,000g/L non-ionic surfactant, or 250-500ml of 700g/L surfactant. When using a surfactant, always follow the product label and do not add spraying oils, agricultural chemicals, or any other material not advised in the directions for use.

Organosilicone penetrants

In certain situations (as indicated in the directions for use table on the product label), weed control can be improved by the addition of an organosilicone penetrant spray solution with a mixing ratio of 200ml/100L.

Rates are a general guide only. Before opening, carefully read the Roundup Biactive Herbicide (Glyphosate) Directions for Use, precautionary and protection statements, storage and disposal information, safety directions, and first aid instructions. This product is designed for the particular purpose indicated on the label only. Failure to use this product strictly as directed may be illegal and dangerous, and render the product ineffective.

Questions and answers from customers

After applying Roundup Biactive Herbicide, how long does it take for the product to be rainfast? If it rains the following day, will the herbicide remain effective, or can it be washed away?

Asked by Jitendra on November 12, 2025 10:23 am

Based on the label for similar products, if it rains the next day after application, your Roundup Biactive Herbicide application should still be effective and will not be washed away. The Roundup Biactive Herbicide label does not specify an exact rainfast hour figure; as such, our answer is based on other similar products. For example, Standard Glyphosate 360 products like Apparent Glyphosate Green 360 state: "Do not treat if rain is likely within 6 hours", indicating that rain the following day should not affect the herbicides' performance. For further clarification about the rainfastness of Roundup Biactive Herbicide specifically, contact the manufacturer Bayer Cropscience Pty Ltd on 1800 636 001

  2. I am a bush regeneration contractor. I am trying to control Zantedescia aethiopica around wet areas. The infestations are too large to be controlled by hand. Glyphosate is listed in WeedWise as a suitable herbicide; however, metsulfuron is more commonly used. Roundup Biactive Herbicide (Glyphosate) is approved for use near waterways. Do I need to add a surfactant? If I do, perhaps a product like Nemo would be best suited.

Zantedescia aethiopica (Arum lily) is included in the APVMA minor use permit PER9907, and you would be able to use Roundup Biactive Herbicide (Glyphosate) as PER9907 specifies herbicides containing 360g/L of Glyphosate may be used. If you intend to add Metsulfuron-methyl to the mix, you can use this for some application methods per PER9907; however, you should follow the registered directions for use relevant to the Metsulfuron-methyl product you are utilising regarding safety around waterways. PER9907 does specify that a surfactant should be used with Metsulfuron-methyl. Nemo Surfactant is an option for you depending on your specific situation. We would recommend performing a 'jar test' where you mix these products at the permitted/directed ratios in a small jar to test compatibility before proceeding.
The directions of use found in the minor use permit must be followed, as well as the relevant directions found in the APVMA label for all products you intend to use.

Roundup Biactive Herbicide (Glyphosate) primarily targets the plant itself, not the seeds. It works by inhibiting plant growth, but it does not directly kill seeds on weed heads.

Glyphosate herbicide can be used to spray African Boxthorn. However, better results are achieved by using dedicated woody weed chemicals such as Grazon, Hatchet, Access, Texulex, Graslan or Hexazinone. Glyphosate is not recommended for use on Prickly Acacia. Herbicides such as Starane, Garlon, Access, Hexazinone, Tebulex, Graslan and Di-Bak AM are better suited. Pets may be at risk if they contact or eat plants still wet with spray from glyphosate products. The best practice in a domestic situation for pets is to remove them while the spray is wet. However, once it has dried, they can return to the area. If you were to remove the dog until the next day (to be on the safe side), you should not have any problems.

Roundup Biactive Herbicide has been formulated explicitly for environmentally sensitive areas and is registered for use in some aquatic areas. As per the 'directions for use'; which can be found on the product screen, scroll down to the heading "SDS & Technical" here you will find PDF files that can be viewed, downloaded or printed; Roundup Biactive can be used in aquatic areas for the control of emerged weeds in all bodies of fresh and brackish water which may be flowing, non-flowing or transient. Also, for weeds on margins of streams, lakes and dams and in channels and drains. When used as directed, withholding periods are not required for livestock. Always carefully read the 'directions for use' before application.

Glyphosate 360g/L (i.e. Roundup Biactive) does not explicitly list Bamboo as a species controlled on the product's label.  The APVMA issued two permits for the use of Glyphosate 360 on Bamboo. Firstly as a spot spray (200mL per 1L Water) applied to regrowth up to 1/2 a metre in height. Secondly, as a cut stump application (1-litre Glyphsoate to 1.5 litres Water).  Retreatment is likely to be necessary.

The chemical labels for products are only supplied and already attached to the chemical containers at the time of manufacture.  An individual label will not be provided to the end user as the manufacturer has no control over what chemical container it is applied to, opening up a liability minefield in the event of an accident.  On the Specialist Sales website product listing for Roundup Biactive Herbicide, under the SDS and Technical tab, the text labels for the product are available to be viewed, downloaded and printed.  We recommend you check with your work to see if this will suffice as to the chemical in your spray pack.

Roundup Biactive Herbicide is registered to be used in many fruit tree situations however care must be taken as damage and death to the desirable tree & vine crops can occur.  Before using Roundup Biactive Herbicide you should carefully read the directions for use label supplied with the product (also available on our website in the SDS & Technical Tab).  On page 2 of the label, you will see important critical comments for spraying in Tree & Vine Crops.

Some of the comments advise; Do not allow spray or spray drift to contact any part of the plant including the trunk.  Do not apply as a spray near trees or vines less than 3 years old unless they are effectively shielded from spray and spray drift.  Avoid painting out stumps with this product as an injury resulting from root grafting may occur in adjacent trees.  Apply as a directed or shielded spray or using wiper equipment.

Tips For Use

Roundup Biactive Herbicide is a common weedkiller that’s easy to use across an array of contexts when product directions are followed closely. Here are some tips for making the most of Roundup Herbicide.

When to use Roundup Herbicide

Ideally, the best time to use Roundup is:

  • when target species are in a state of active growth;
  • moderate climactic conditions are present; and
  • plants are free of disease and dirt cover.

Weather and environmental constraints

  • Do not disturb treated weeds by cultivating, sowing, or grazing for at least a day following treatment for annual weeds, and 7 days after treatment for perennial weeds.
  • Do not treat weeds affected by drought, waterlogging, disease, insect damage, or frost.
  • Rainfall occurring up to 6 hours after application may reduce effectiveness.
  • Heavy rainfall within 2 hours of application may wash the chemical off the foliage, necessitating repeat treatment.
  • Control efficacy may be affected when treating weeds heavily covered with dust or silt.

Mixing tips

  • Do not use mechanical agitators when mixing Roundup weedkiller, as these may cause excessive foaming.
  • Do not add non-approved herbicides and/or insecticides to Roundup.
  • Use only plastic, plastic-lined, stainless steel, aluminium, brass, copper, or fibreglass containers and spray tanks. Galvanised steel or unlined steel containers or spray tanks can react with the product to produce hydrogen gas, which can form a combustible gas mixture that can be flashed by ignition sources.

Safely using Roundup around other crops

Do not allow Roundup Biactive Herbicide to come into contact with the foliage, fruit, or green stems of desirable crops, plants, or trees, as glyphosate is non-selective. Some useful guidelines to help you avoid contact with other crops include:

  • Do not use if the wind is blowing towards desirable plants in close proximity.
  • Avoid fine droplet settings (150 micron or less) when calibrating your sprayer.
  • Avoid spraying in winds greater than 8km/hr, still air, or on hot days.

Sowing tips

While Roundup weedkiller is rapidly inactivated upon contact with the soil, it’s still important to keep these factors in mind:

  • Where there is a light presence of unwanted plant species, sowing can be commenced from one day after spraying.
  • Where plant cover is heavy, it’s better to allow weeds to decay prior to sowing to permit the formation of a satisfactory seed head.

First aid

If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre immediately. The Poisons helpline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from anywhere in Australia at 131 126.

For additional safety information, refer to the Roundup Biactive Herbicide Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
