    Speed kill

    Ross (verified owner)

I have been using this ingredient for many years now as it speeds the death of broadleaf weeds dramatically when I add it to my broadleaf herbicide. Also it is the only product I found that kills marshmallow both above and below the ground in lawns as well as onion grass.
So basically, it is the cream on the top of broadleaf additives. And at a mixture rate of just 1ml per 10 litres , it lasts forever. In fact it is so strong, I found using 2.5mls in my 25 Ltr spray trolley was too strong as it yellowed some sensitive grass. So I use just 2ml per 25ltrs which works perfectly for me.

Questions and answers from customers

Hi, I live near Maleny in SE QLD, and have a significant infestation of marshmallow in lawn that is a combination of buffalo and couch. Is Spike OK to mix with a BROMOXYNIL based herbicide such as Superway Buffalo Soldier, or can it be used on its own? I understand that I can mix Spike with Glyphosate based herbicides for border areas, but obviously can't use Glyphosate on the lawn! Your advice would be appreciated. Thanks Peter

For use in turf areas, Spike 240EC Herbicide can be used on its own, but mixing it with other herbicides will broaden the spectrum of weeds controlled.  Spike is compatible to be tank-mixed with herbicides registered for use in turf such as Dicamba & 24D Amine but does not explicitly mention the Bromoxynil + MCPA Herbicide such as Surefire Buffalo and Bindi Weedkiller.  We believe it would be worth trying with the Bromoxynil+MCPA Herbicide in an inconspicuous area and are unaware of any antagonism issues.

Tips For Use

General Instructions:

  • Spike 240 Herbicide is an emulsifiable concentrate formulation and is to be mixed with water and applied as per the labelled Directions for Use.
  • Spike 240 Herbicide is a post-emergence herbicide to be added to knockdown herbicides to improve the control of certain broadleaf weeds including marshmallow prior to the establishment of fallows, winter and summer broadacre and horticultural crops, marshmallow control in grass pastures, in commercial, industrial and public service areas, around agricultural buildings, yards and other farm situations or in tree fruits, nuts and grapevines.
  • Spike 240 Herbicide can be used alone with a suitable adjuvant for control of volunteer cotton seedlings including Roundup Ready cotton. It can also be used for desiccation of regrowth in cotton.
  • Spike 240 Herbicide is a fast acting contact herbicide and aids in the control of weeds through a process of membrane disruption. The foliar uptake of Spike 240 Herbicide is rapid and plant desiccation can occur within 4 days of application. Application of Spike 240 Herbicide should target small actively growing weeds.  Subsequent germinations will not be controlled.

Symptoms:

  • Spike 240 Herbicide is rapidly absorbed through the foliage of plants.
  • Within a few hours following application, the foliage of susceptible weeds show signs of desiccation, and in subsequent days necrosis and death of the plant.
  • Extreme environmental conditions e.g. temperature and moisture, soil conditions and cultural practices may affect the activity of Spike 240 Herbicide.
  • Under warm moist conditions, herbicide symptoms may be accelerated.
  • While under very dry conditions, the expression of herbicidal symptoms is delayed, and weeds hardened off by drought are less susceptible to Spike 240 Herbicide.

Knapsack, Pneumatic, Handgun sprayers

  • Apply Spike 240 Herbicide at the recommended rate of 1 mL per 10 litres (10 mL per 100 litres) in conjunction with labelled handgun rates of a knockdown herbicide (ie Glyphosate) in sufficient water to adequately and uniformly wet the foliage of the weeds being sprayed.
  • A spray volume of 500 L to 1000 L will usually be sufficient but higher volumes may be required for dense taller vegetation.

Restraints:

  • Do not apply by aerial application except for cotton desiccation.

Storage:

  • Store in the closed, original container in a cool, well-ventilated area.
  • Do not store for prolonged periods in direct sunlight.
