Spartan Herbicide (Prodiamine) SPARTAN Turf Culture

Description

Spartan Herbicide

Active Ingredient: Prodiamine @ 480g/L

Spartan Herbicide is a selective pre-emergent herbicide that provides residual control of weeds in established turf.

Spartan Herbicide controls susceptible weeds by interfering with cell division in the root tips of newly germinated weeds.

Spartan Herbicide contains 480 g/L prodiamine in the form of a suspension concentrate (SC).

What established turf can Spartan Herbicide be used in listed;

  • Bahia Grass (Paspalum notatum),
  • Buffalo Grass (Stenotaphrum secundatum),
  • Carpet Grass (Axonopus affinis, Axonopus compressus),
  • Couch, Common (Cynodon dactylon),
  • Couch, Hybrid (Cynodon dactylon x Cynodon transvaalensis),
  • Kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestinum),
  • Qld Blue Couch (Digitaria didactyla),
  • Seashore Paspalum (Paspalum vaginatun),
  • Zoysia (Zoysia japonica, Zoysia matrella)

What weeds is Spartan Herbicide registered to control;

  • Barnyard Grass (Echinochloa crus-gali),
  • Crab Grass (Digitaria sanguinalis),
  • Parramatta Grass (Sporobolus africana),
  • Rat’s Tail Fescue (Vulpia myuros),
  • Summer Grass / Crab Grass (Digitaria sanguinalis)
  • Crowsfoot Grass (Eleusine indica)
  • African Lovegrass (Eragrostis curvula),
  • Bahia Grass (Paspalum notatum),
  • Kentucky Blue Grass (Poa patensis)
  • Paspalum (Paspalum dilitatum)
  • Winter Grass (Poa annua)

Spartan Herbicide’s selectivity is primarily through soil profile placement.  Achieving this soil profile placement of Spartan Herbicide correctly is vital to obtain high efficacy.  Applicators should ensure an even matrix flow through the soil profile to achieve a consistent and even zone of herbicide activity.

After application, plants that have the majority of their root system in the herbicide profile zone cannot effectively absorb the water and nutrients required for root and plant development. Therefore good even coverage and incorporation is required to ensure the weeds cannot recover by establishing roots outside the zone of herbicide activity.

Small seeded plants (i.e. annual grass weeds) are affected more by the herbicide than established grasses as they germinate in the soil profile zone of herbicide placement (i.e. 100% of their germinating root system is affected by the herbicide).

Warm-season grasses can be less prone to root inhibition due to the fact that they have multiple fibrous root systems with established roots beyond the depth of the zone of herbicide activity and are therefore are still able to obtain moisture and nutrients.

Weed control in turf is most effective when Spartan Herbicide is activated by at least 6 mm of rainfall or irrigation before weed seeds germinate and within 7 days after application.

Switched from Embargo to Spartan (the former no longer available)

Only three applications used since purchasing during 2023. A 99% knockout rate for Winter Grass. Embargo was closer to 75%. The added bonus of Spartan is that I’m no longer seeing the dreaded oxalis. Pretty much now a total weed free lawn. Awesome product.

So far so good. It has only been applied for a week. Be careful with spills It leaves yellow stain on the sprayer and I accidentally dribbled it across my path. The spots haven’t gone with rain so I will have to use detergent to clean it up.

Spartan Herbicide is a selective pre-emergent herbicide that provides residual control of weeds in established turf (buffalo included). Spartan will assist with the control of existing seedbeds of registered controlled weeds by interfering with cell division in the root tips as they germinate. Spartan Herbicide does not control already established weeds. They must be removed with a post-emergent spray such as Bow & Arrow Herbicide or Surefire Buffalo, Bindi & Broadleaf Weedkiller.

Spartan Herbicide does not include a wetting agent in its formulation, but it is compatible with other wetting agents. To control summer grasses, apply before weed emergence in early spring for up to 6 months of residual control. For winter grass control, apply before weed emergence in late summer to early autumn for up to 6 months of residual control. A repeat application (3 to 4 months after initial application) may be needed in high weed pressure situations or during extended germination periods due to environmental conditions.

The Spartan Herbicide Withholding Period refers to the consumption of poultry or livestock (or their byproducts - i.e. eggs) that graze or feed on treated turf/lawn areas (including clippings) where Spartan Herbicide has been sprayed.

The Australian Government department regulating pesticides and veterinary medicines (APVMA) defines withholding periods as "The withholding period is the minimum period that must elapse between the last administration or application of a pesticide or veterinary medicine, including treated feed, and the slaughter, collection, harvesting or use of the animal or crop commodity for human consumption. WHPs are mandatory for domestic slaughter and are on the label of every registered product."

Per the Spartan Herbicide APVMA approved label, it has a withholding period which would apply to chickens that will be used either for meat or egg production now or anytime in the future.  The Withholding Period Details (WHP) states, "do not graze treated turf/lawn or feed turf/ lawn clippings from any treated area to poultry or livestock".  If the chickens are not used for egg or meat production, they can re-enter the area once the spray has dried.

Tips For Use

How to get the most out of your application of Spartan Herbicide:

  • Soil Preparation: Areas to be treated should be free of established weeds.
  • Apply prior to germination of weeds.
  • Apply at a water volume not be lower than 500 L/ha per hectare (5 L per 100 m2).
  • An addition of a soil penetrant is recommended to ensure an even matrix flow through the soil profile.
  • The addition of crop oil concentrate may result in crop injury and reduced compatibility in the spray tank.
  • Spartan Herbicide should be incorporated by 6 mm of spray irrigation or rainfall as soon as possible, at least within 7 days after application
  • Weed control in turf is most effective when Spartan Herbicide is activated by at least 6 mm of rainfall or irrigation before weed seeds germinate and within 7 days after application.

Restraints:

  • Do not blend Spartan Herbicide onto dry fertiliser or any other granular material.
  • Do not apply to turf under stress.
  • Do not apply to golf course putting greens or bowling greens.
  • Do not apply to newly seeded, sodded or sprigged turf. Delay application until turf is at 100% cover and the root system is developed beyond a 3 cm depth.
  • Do not apply if heavy rain has been forecast within 48 hours.
  • Do not apply to waterlogged soil.
  • Do not irrigate to the point of run-off within 3 days of application.
  • Do not apply to turf which is not well-established.
  • Do not apply with aircraft or through any type of irrigation equipment.

Mixing:

  • Add the required quantity of Spartan Herbicide directly to a spray tank containing 2/3 of the required spray volume. Add the rest of the water and ensure the mix is thoroughly agitated before application.

Application:

  • Apply prior to weed emergence in early spring (summer weeds) or late summer to early autumn (Winter Grass, Poa annua).
  • Ensure product placement as close to soil surface as possible.
  • Total application volume should not be lower than 500 L/ha.
  • Use extremely coarse droplets, [Turbo FloodJet (TF5) or TurfJet (TTJ10) or Air Induction 08 nozzles], use strainers with no less than a 50-mesh rating.
  • Wash in with at least 6 mm rain or irrigation within 7 days of application.
  • Spray nozzles should be uniformly spaced and of the same size and should provide an accurate and uniform application.
  • To ensure accuracy, calibrate the sprayer at the beginning of the season before use and recalibrate frequently.
  • Apply at a volume of greater than 500 L water/ha.
  • Observe sprayer nozzles frequently during the spraying operation to ensure that the spray pattern is uniform.
  • Avoid overlapping of spray runs.
  • Ensure that boom height for broadcast application does not exceed 50 cm above the leaf blades of the turf.
  • Avoid application under conditions when uniform coverage cannot be obtained or when spray drift may occur.

Compatibility:

  • As formulations of other manufacturers’ products are beyond the control of Turf Culture, and water quality varies with location, all mixtures should be tested prior to mixing commercial quantities. Spartan Herbicide is compatible with Coliseum Herbicide and Skeletor Herbicide.

Replanting Interval:

  • Do not replant any crop, ornamentals or over-seed with cool-season grasses for winter cover to treated areas for a period of 6 months after application.

Precautions:

  • Re-entry Period
  • General Public: Do not allow public entry into treated areas until the spray has dried.
  • Professional Operators: Do not allow entry into treated areas until spray has dried.  If prior entry is necessary wear cotton overalls buttoned to the neck and wrist (or equivalent clothing) and chemical resistant gloves.  Clothing must be laundered after each day’s use.

Storage:

  • Store in the closed, original container in a cool, well-ventilated area.
  • Do not store for prolonged periods in direct sunlight.

Safety Directions:

  • May irritate the eyes and skin.
  • Repeated exposure may cause allergic disorders.
  • Avoid contact with eyes and skin.
  • When opening the container, preparing spray and using the prepared spray; wear cotton overalls buttoned to the neck and wrist (or equivalent clothing) and elbow-length chemical resistant gloves.
  • If the product on the skin, immediately wash the area with soap and water.
  • Wash hands after use.
  • After each day’s use, wash gloves and contaminated clothing.
