16-gauge needles are bigger (wider) than 18-gauge needles.

Needle gauge works inversely — the higher the gauge number, the finer the needle. A 16G needle has a larger outer diameter (~1.65mm) than an 18G (~1.27mm). The same logic applies across the full range: a 14G is wider again, while a 21G or 23G is much finer.

As a rough rule of thumb for veterinary/farm use: lower gauge = thicker bore = suited to thicker/oilier products and larger animals; higher gauge = finer bore = suited to thinner solutions and smaller or more sensitive injection sites.
