Spot Gun 4mL + 5L Backpack - Soil & Stem Injector (Velpar Applicator) SPOTGUN NJ Phillips

Description

4ml Spot Gun – Soil & Stem Injector (For use with Hexazinone / Velpar)

  • 1 x 4mL Handgun which is used for soil application and stem injection
  • 1 x 5L BackPack (Suitable for Hexazine Herbicide.), Straps, feeder tube and springs.
  • 1 x Service Kit (Seal, Spring & Valve)
    • Nb: Backpack Draw Up Tube & Backpack Holder are not included

The Hexazinone 4mL Spot Gun is specially designed for Hexazinone Herbicide (Velpar L) application for soil and for stem injection techniques.

The calibration dial has three settings and can be quickly and easily set at the required dose depending on the application technique.

Hexazinone Herbicide is available in 10L containers to make filling the 5L Backpack easier.

Special Features:

  • The Spotgun is versatile – it can be used for soil application and stem injection including Hexazinone Herbicide.
  • Hexazinone Herbicide controls a wide range of problem species.
  • Hexazinone Herbicide is more cost efficient than other available chemicals and techniques.  It saves time, labour and chemical costs.
  • It gives excellent regrowth and sucker control.
  • It is convenient and easy to apply.
  • There is no time wasted mixing sprays.
  • There are no hassles of carrying spray equipment and dragging hoses around the scrub.
  • There is no vapour or spray drift with a Spotgun.
  • Roots degrade quickly for easy removal.
  • It can be conveniently carried around the farm.

Why the 4 ml Spot Gun / Soil Injector Is so Easy to Use:

Instead of being mixed with Diesel or water, Hexazinone Herbicide is applied undiluted through the Spot Gun.  Fill the backpack with straight Hexazinone and you are ready to go. There is no mixing, no heavy hoses to drag around, no heavy knapsack on your back and virtually no effort.  You can forget about all the time wasted setting up equipment and mixing sprays. Its a go anywhere system and you can use it anytime.

4 ml Spot Gun / Soil Injector Maintenance:

It is essential to clean the 4mL Spot Gun after each use.  The easiest way is to put warm water in the backpack and pump it through the Spotgun. Be careful that the wastewater does not drain onto any desirable plants.  To make the 4mL Spot Gun easier to use, it is recommended to pump Castor Oil or Vegetable Oil through it before commencing applications.

Important Points:

  • Hexazinone may be used all year round but since rainfall is required to move it into the soil and to promote active plant growth, quickest results are obtained when it is applied to moist soil and rainfall follows soon after application.
  • Hexazinone can remain on the soil surface during extended periods of dry weather and when the rain comes there is little loss of control.
  • Do not apply, flush or clean equipment near desirable vegetation as Hexazinone Herbicide residue may affect them.  As a general rule you should not apply Hexazinone Herbicide closer than within twice the height of trees and vegetation you do not wish to control.

Directions Of Use

Soil Application:

The 4mL Spotgun delivers a metered dose of Hexazinone Herbicide which is directed onto the soil, not the trunk, at the base of the plant and within the dripline.  From here it is moved into the soil by rainfall where it is taken up by the roots and then moves to the leaves.

The rate of application and the number of spots depends on the height of the plant to be controlled, and the species.   The grid application pattern should be used where suckers are forming a dense ground cover. If there is leaf litter underneath the plant, clear a small area then apply the Hexazinone Herbicide.  See Hexazinone Herbicide directions of use for full instructions.

The soil application technique should be used;

  • For seedlings up to the stage when stem injection is practical
  • For regrowth resulting from other control measures
  • For multi-stem shrub type growth
  • Where selectively is not required.

The spear attachment (sold separately) should be used on sloping ground and when heavy leaf litter is beneath the plant.  Place the spear on the high side of the bush about 2cm into the soil.

Stem Injection:

  • The stem injection technique offers a more economical method of controlling larger regrowth than the soil application technique.
  • Make axe cuts with a narrow bladed axe (5-7cm wide) into the sapwood just under the bark at waist height.
  • Do not cut into the hardwood.
  • Inject the metered dose of Hexazinone Herbicide while the axe is still in the cut and within 5 seconds of making the cuts.  Chemical uptake is dependent on good sap flow.
  • The number of cuts will depend on the circumference of the tree. See Hexazinone Herbicide directions of use for full instructions.
  • For multi-stemmed trees, treat each stem as an individual tree.
  • The Stem Injection Technique is used for larger regrowth timber when selectivity is important.  Stem Injection is more economical than soil applications in this situation.

Control Times:

  • Once in the soil, Hexazinone Herbicide is taken up by the roots and translocated within the plant.
  • It works by inhibiting the photosynthesis process, starving the plant to death.  This is a slow process.
  • The plant may not appear affected for a while (particularly under dry conditions) and may defoliate and refoliate several times before it completely dies.
  • Complete control normally occurs within 12 months however under adverse conditions it sometimes may take longer.

The Spot Gun applicator is not used to penetrate trunks, stems or roots that have not been cut open or exposed in advance.  The Spot-Gun is typically used to apply a 'spot' of a concentrated chemical such as Velpar (Tressel or Hexatron) onto bare soil where it is leached into the root system.  Alternatively, the Spot-Gun can inject herbicide into an open cut applied by an axe into a trunk or stem of a tree.

It sounds as though the Spotgun has ceased up perhaps from not being cleaned properly after its last use.  It is essential to clean the 4mL Spot Gun after each use.  The easiest way is to put warm water in the backpack and pump it through the Spotgun.  To make the 4mL Spot Gun easier to use, it is recommended to pump Castor Oil or Vegetable Oil through it before commencing applications.

The Spotgun can be dismantled if required.  When the Spotgun kit was shipped there would have been a Y-shaped spanner that is used to losen the black body plug nut that sits in between the dose adjustor and the red housing of the gun.  Once loosened you should be able to ease the pushrod from the cylinder barrel.  If the lubricating washer or seal ring has perished then these can be replaced.

Important:

Many of the harsh chemicals used through the SpotGuns (ie Hexazinone, Glyphosate) will crystalise in the barrel of the gun as soon as it dries out.  The manufacturer suggests flushing the gun with clean water only as soon as possible after use.  If crystals have formed it is recommended that the Spotgun & draw up tube should be completely broken down and left sitting in a bucket of water overnight.  Reassemble the gun as per the spare parts diagram (found in ‘SDS & Technical ‘Tab) and it should be fine to use.  If there is a sound of gas escaping the barrel when squeezed then there is a chance one of the valves has been replaced backwards.  It is also advised to have a good set of tweezers available for some of the more finicky pieces.
