So glad I invested in this. One 100ml bottle is going to last me years, and it is absolutely magical stuff – pinpoint accurate against all the grassy weeds whilst being perfectly harmless to basically all the turf grass varieties. Pretty much the only one suitable for Qld blue couch, so I’m loving it. It’s nailed the paspalum and bahia grass in my lawn in one application, so now my couch can finally get some breathing room.

Also, best price I’ve found in aus. Thanks specialistsales!

    Slowly but sure

We have used this product now for close to a year, over 3 gardens. One garden was well maintained and has given the best results. The 2nd oldest garden has taken 3 treatments and the very old grass has finally given up. Oddly the chickweed has tried and also some patches with clover. The 3rd garden is fairly new, with an old footpath. This one is still under maintenance & the dogs dig up soil and grass, hence the green patches. I love walking around and grabbing old runners and lifting out about a foot worth of dead grass. We did sow some new couch seed with some growth improver as well on the old lawn. Overall we are very impressed with Monument Liquid Turf Herbicide. Some grass will die fast other well established old grass will take time.

Questions and answers from customers

I have kikuyu in a couch lawn and plan to spot hand-spray with Monument Liquid Turf Herbicide over multiple patches of about 10m² each. The kikuyu is thick and prominent. Would my situation be considered high or low cut, and does the heavier infestation mean I need the higher rate?

A couple of important points here.

First, "high cut" and "low cut" on the Monument Liquid label refer to the height the turf is being mowed at, not the density or severity of the weed infestation. Low cut means turf maintained below approximately 15mm (e.g., golf fairways, bowling greens, intensively managed hybrid couch). High cut means turf maintained above 15mm — which covers the vast majority of home and park couch lawns. A standard home couch lawn is almost always in the high cut category.

The reason the water volume changes with cut height is canopy penetration. Taller, denser turf needs more water volume to carry the product down into the crowns and achieve even coverage. The amount of product per hectare stays the same — only the water volume changes. So, high cut is not a doubled product rate; it's the same product diluted into more water, which is why the concentration per litre is lower (0.28mL/L) than for low cut (0.56mL/L).

For your home couch lawn, high cut applies — use 0.28mL per litre of water.

Second, it's worth noting that Monument Liquid is registered for suppression only of kikuyu, not full control. Kikuyu is a persistent, deep-rooted grass, and Monument will set it back rather than eliminate it. Two applications 21–28 days apart are required, with the best results achieved from autumn applications.

Third, the Monument Liquid label specifies boom spray as the registered application method. The existing Q&A on this page addresses hand spraying in detail — in short, it is an off-label application method, and the outcome cannot be guaranteed, as even coverage is much harder to achieve with a hand sprayer. If you choose to proceed, you do so at your own risk, and we recommend contacting Syngenta Australia on 1800 022 035 for specific guidance.

You do not need to water in Monument Liquid Turf Herbicide, and you should wait at least 24 - 48 hours before any watering or irrigation. Please note the Monument application is only registered to be applied by boom spray application as it is very important to get an even disbursement of the chemical over the target area.  Often, with hand sprays, the application is much harder to spread evenly, resulting in higher than recommended rates being applied or spraying, causing damage and/or death of the host species. As a result, the outcome cannot be guaranteed.

When using Monument Liquid Turf Herbicide, optimum performance will be achieved if you avoid mowing for 1 to 2 days before and following application. Monument Liquid Turf Herbicide contains 100 g/L trifloxysulfuron sodium, a member of the sulfonylurea herbicides.  Sulfonylureas are slow-acting herbicides, so the longer you can put off irrigation, the more time you will allow translocation to occur.  Waiting at least 24-48 hours should be fine before irrigation.

The application of the Monument is only registered to be applied by boom spray application as it is very important to get an even disbursement of the chemical over the target area.  Often with hand sprays, the application is much harder to spread evenly resulting in higher than recommended rates being applied or over spraying causing damage and/or death of the host species.

If you choose to go 'off-label', it is at your risk.  The general mixing rate of Monument Herbicide for winter grass control is 225mL per 10,000m2.  This equates to 2.25mL of the chemical being applied evenly over a 100m2 area.

There are also other factors to take into consideration such as the height of the turf you are spraying (ie high or low cut) and the water volume required for penetration of the chemical.

For lower cut turf the recommended water rate per Ha is 400L, which equates to 1L per 25m2.  So ff the mixing rate is 225mL/400L, then the per L mixing rate of Monument is 0.56mL per 1L.

For higher cut turf the recommended water rate per Ha is is 800L, which equates to 1L per 12.5m2.  So if the mixing rate of Monument is 225mL/800L, the per L mixing rate is 0.28mL per 1L.

Tips For Use

Application Timing

  • Apply to actively growing weeds. Annual weeds such as Winter Grass and Ryegrass reach a “green skeleton” stage late in the season. At this point they are alive but no longer growing, and systemic uptake ceases. Applications to Ryegrass in early October, for example, may give sub-lethal results if sap flow has stopped.
  • Avoid mowing for 1 to 2 days before and after application. Mowing immediately before application reduces leaf surface area available for absorption. Mowing immediately after can remove treated tissue before the active ingredient has fully translocated.
  • Monument Liquid is most effective at soil temperatures of 15°C and above. Avoid application below 14°C. Activity effectively stops below 12°C.
  • For Kikuyu suppression, time the first application around the end of March and the second around the end of April for best autumn results.

Spray Tank Preparation

  • Test your water source. If pH is below 5.5, buffer to near pH 7 before adding Monument Liquid. The active constituent degrades rapidly in acidic conditions. Do not use phenoxy herbicides or acidifying fertilisers as tank mix partners.
  • Fill the tank no more than 25% full with clean water, then add Monument Liquid with vigorous agitation. Continue agitation throughout mixing and spraying. Add the non-ionic surfactant last at 0.25% v/v (1000 g ai/L products) or 0.42% v/v (600 g ai/L products).
  • Do not leave the spray solution standing in the tank overnight.
  • Avoid very cold water in the tank, as this can affect the OD formulation.

Spray Equipment and Volume

  • Target leaves and crowns. Use an XC 04 nozzle at 2 to 4 bar pressure.
  • Apply at 400 to 800 L/ha. In semi-roughs, roughs, and long-cut turf above 15 mm, use the higher end of the volume range to ensure adequate canopy penetration.
  • Monument Liquid is rainfast within 3 hours of application. Do not apply if rainfall is expected within 3 hours.
  • Do not apply more than two consecutive applications of Monument Liquid per season for Bahia Grass seedhead suppression.

Overseeding and Re-entry

  • Allow at least 6 weeks between the last application and overseeding with cool-season grasses for winter cover.
  • Do not allow entry into treated areas until the spray has dried. If re-entry is unavoidable before drying, wear cotton overalls buttoned to neck and wrist plus chemical-resistant gloves. Launder clothing after each day’s use.

Resistance Management

  • Monument Liquid is a Group B herbicide. Rotate with products from other mode-of-action groups to reduce selection pressure. Tank mixing with Barricade (Group D) pre-emergent is an effective integrated strategy.
  • Where Poa annua populations show patchy survival after treatment, this may indicate the presence of a tolerant biotype. Combine a pre-emergent such as Barricade with Monument Liquid to manage difficult populations.

First Aid

  • If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or the Poisons Information Centre. Phone Australia 131 126.
  • For further information, refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS).

This information and product advice are not intended as advice or recommendations for any specific use or circumstance. You should seek specialist advice before using any product. Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines. Specialist Sales liability is limited.

Withholding Period

Withholding Period Details (WHP):

  • Do not graze treated turf or lawn.
  • Do not feed turf or lawn clippings from any treated area to poultry or livestock.
  • No numeric withholding period in days is stated on the label.
  • Re-entry: Do not allow entry into treated areas until the spray has dried unless wearing cotton overalls buttoned to the neck and wrist (or equivalent clothing) plus chemical-resistant gloves. Launder clothing after each day’s use.
