Liquid Herbicides
Woody and noxious weeds are prevalent across Australia’s diverse landscape, and liquid herbicides are the key to keeping these unwanted species under control.
Liquid herbicides are formulated for effective use via a range of methods, including foliar spraying, basal bark application, and cut stump application, which makes them a versatile option for both spot and broadacre treatments.

What are woody weed liquid herbicides?
Woody weed liquid herbicides are chemicals that have been formulated specifically to eliminate common woody and noxious weeds.
Unlike everyday herbicides, they are built to handle tough and hard-to-kill species, including thick, deep-rooted plants with dense foliage. Liquid herbicides with active ingredients like aminopyralid and triclopyr offer a targeted, efficient way to clear these unwanted species out for good.
Which species do woody weed herbicides target?
Woody weeds are mainly used to tackle invasive species like lantana, blackberry, gorse, and other woody regrowths that threaten grazing land and native ecosystems.
Popular active ingredients in liquid herbicides
When it comes to treating woody weeds with herbicides, three active ingredients stand out: triclopyr, picloram, and aminopyralid. When used together, these heavy hitters create the most potent formula for eradicating stubborn plant species.
-
- Triclopyr: Once absorbed through the leaves and roots, triclopyr ingredient triggers abnormal, out-of-control plant growth, which eventually leads to death. It’s a selective herbicide, which means it will kill target weeds without harming surrounding grasses, so your pasture stays intact.
- Picloram: Ideal for controlling deep-rooted weeds like prickly acacia and blackberry, picloram works by blocking the plant’s nutrient transport system, effectively starving it from the inside-out. Picloram has selective residual activity in the soil to provide longer-lasting control against weeds with a tendency to reoccur.
- Aminopyralid: With a mode of action that’s similar to triclopyr, aminopyralid is a selective herbicide with proven efficacy against woody weeds and broadleaf weeds. Just like the others, aminopyralid is selective, so it won’t harm neighbouring grasses or off-target plants.
These ingredients are often combined for a one-two punch that tackles even the toughest weeds. You’ll find many herbicides on the market contain a mixture of two or all three.
How to use liquid herbicides
For best results when using liquid herbicides to control woody weeds, consider these tips:
- Using penetrants: Many woody weeds have waxy or hairy leaves that are known to repel herbicides, especially if applied under variable weather conditions. Adding a penetrant to the mix will help the chemical stick to the leaves and penetrate the plant better for more effective control.
- Timing: Apply your chosen herbicide during periods of active growth for the best chance at eradication. This is usually in spring or summer, when the weeds are at their most vulnerable and thus, have the most capacity to absorb chemicals.
- Application method: When addressing young weeds, it’s often recommended to use foliar sprays that are administered directly to the leaves. For mature woody plants, try a basal bark or cut stump application method to see better results.
- Safety: Always read the Product Label and follow manufacturer’s instructions closely. Wear protective gear when applying herbicides, and be mindful of environmental factors that may cause off-target damage, such as wind and nearby water sources.
