Sporo 745 Herbicide

AC Sporo 745 Herbicide is a Group 0 flupropanate formulation (745 g/L as the sodium salt) for the long-term, residual control of damaging pasture grasses, including serrated tussock, Parramatta grass, African love grass, rats tail grass, kikuyu, couch, and Johnson grass in Australian pasture and non-crop situations.

Developed by Axichem Pty Ltd, it acts through soil uptake and delivers control of existing growth over 3 to 12 months, with extended residual suppression of grass seed germination. It suits pastoralists, land managers, and industrial site operators dealing with persistent grass infestations where a slow-acting, systemic soil herbicide is needed. Compatible with glyphosate for improved knockdown, AC Sporo 745 Herbicide is applied by ground boom, aerial, or spot spray equipment.

Sporo 745 Herbicide SPORO Axichem

Description

AC Sporo 745 Flupropanate Herbicide for Pasture Grass Control

AC Sporo 745 Herbicide delivers targeted, residual control of some of Australia’s most damaging pasture grasses, including serrated tussock, Parramatta grass, African love grass, rats tail grass, kikuyu, couch, and Johnson grass. Formulated by Axichem Pty Ltd, it contains 745 g/L flupropanate present as the sodium salt, and carries APVMA Approval No. 64857/143888. It suits pasture situations, non-crop areas, and industrial use sites where persistent grass infestations need long-term management.

This product works as a Group 0 herbicide, belonging to the chlorocarbonic acids group with an unknown mode of action. As a result, it provides a useful rotational option for resistance management where other herbicide groups have been used repeatedly. Notably, AC Sporo 745 Herbicide acts slowly. Control of existing growth typically takes 3 to 12 months, depending on weather conditions and plant senescence. Furthermore, the product delivers residual soil activity, suppressing grass seed germination over an extended period following application.

Key Application Summary

Crop/Situation Weeds Controlled Rate (Ground/ha)
Pastures and non-crop Serrated Tussock 2L/ha
Pastures and non-crop Parramatta grass, African love grass 2-3L/ha
Pastures and non-crop (Qld) Rat’s Tail Grass 2L/ha
Non-crop (Qld, NSW, ACT) Paspalum, Kikuyu, Couch 9L/ha
Non-crop Johnson Grass, Columbus Grass 12-22L/ha

The optimal application window is November to February inclusive. This timing reduces impact on desirable pasture species and allows residues to leach before autumn re-seeding. Apply in 800 to 2,000 litres of water per hectare for ground boom equipment, and ensure full leaf coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does AC Sporo 745 Herbicide take to work?

Control of existing growth takes 3 to 12 months. Results depend on weather conditions, plant senescence, soil type, and rainfall. This is a slow-acting, residual product, not a knockdown herbicide.

Can AC Sporo 745 be mixed with other herbicides?

Yes. The product is compatible with glyphosate to improve the knockdown of existing vegetation. When mixing with dispersible powders, first make a slurry, add to a half-filled tank, then add flupropanate and fill to volume.

Is a wetting agent needed with AC Sporo 745?

Yes. The addition of 100mL of a non-ionic surfactant (600 g/L) per 100 litres of spray is recommended for best results.

What are the stock grazing restrictions after application?

Two withholding periods apply. After spot spraying, do not graze or cut for stock feed for at least 14 days. After blanket treatment, do not graze or cut for 4 months. Additionally, stock must not graze treated areas for at least 14 days before slaughter, regardless of treatment method.

Can AC Sporo 745 be used near waterways or in channels?

No. Avoid use in channels, drains, and areas where roots of desirable plants may extend. Do not contaminate streams, rivers, or watercourses.

    Answered by the admin

Sporo 745 Herbicide (745 g/L flupropanate) is a slow-acting, soil-active herbicide primarily absorbed through roots for long-term control of perennial grasses like giant rat's tail grass. Ploughing or cultivation before application is not typically recommended or required for better penetration. Flupropanate works via root uptake after leaching into the soil (activated by rainfall or irrigation), so disturbing the soil with ploughing could reduce even distribution, increase leaching risk on slopes, or bring up untreated soil/weed seeds. The label for Sporo 745 and similar flupropanate products advises applying to existing growth without prior cultivation for optimal selectivity and residual control. For reseeding of desirable grasses after treatment, Flupropanate has long soil persistence (months), so wait until sufficient leaching rain (often 100mm+) has fallen post-application before sowing and review any plant-back periods for your desirable species.

Tips For Use

Restraints:

  • Do not apply to steeply sloping sites when using high rates for perennial grass control.
  • Do not allow spray drift onto susceptible crops, ornamentals, or desirable trees.
  • Apply only when the wind speed is between 3 and 20 kilometres per hour.
  • Do not apply during hazardous surface temperature inversion conditions (typically one to two hours before sunset to one to two hours after sunrise).
  • Do not allow bystanders to contact the spray cloud.

General Instructions:

  • This product is slow-acting. Expect 3 to 12 months for full control of existing growth, depending on weather and plant senescence.
  • The product leaches under heavy rainfall or irrigation. Dry conditions favour persistence in the soil.
  • Avoid use in channels, drains, and areas where roots of desirable plants may extend.
  • Shaded conditions may reduce control effectiveness.
  • Do not treat pasture land with this product more than once per year.
  • Subterranean clover and other annual legumes may sustain damage if exposed to spray or if they germinate before residues dissipate.

Mixing Instructions:

  • Add the required amount directly to the spray tank while running the agitation. When mixing with dispersible powders, make a slurry first, add to a half-filled tank, then add flupropanate and fill to volume.
  • Add 100mL of non-ionic surfactant (600 g/L) per 100 litres of spray.

Compatibility:

  • Compatible with glyphosate for the knockdown of existing vegetation.

Re-seeding:

  • Desirable pasture species, including phalaris, cocksfoot, ryegrass, clovers, and lucerne, may be sown after at least 100mm of leaching rain has fallen. Defer sowing until the next season if drought conditions continue.

Protection of Crops, Native and Other Non-Target Plants:

  • Do not apply under conditions or from equipment that may cause spray drift onto nearby susceptible plants, crops, cropping lands, or pastures.

Protection of Wildlife, Fish, Crustaceans and the Environment:

  • Do not contaminate streams, rivers, or watercourses with the chemical or used containers.

Protection of Livestock:

  • Two withholding periods apply. Spot spraying: do not graze or cut for stock feed for at least 14 days after treatment. Blanket treatment: do not graze or cut for stock feed for 4 months after application. Stock grazed in treated areas must then be moved to untreated areas or fed clean feed for at least 14 days before slaughter. This requirement applies permanently to treated areas.
  • Lactating animals producing milk for human consumption must not graze treated areas.

Storage:

  • Store in the closed original container in a cool, well-ventilated area.
  • Do not store for prolonged periods in direct sunlight.

Disposal:

  • Triple-rinse containers before disposal. Add rinsings to the spray tank.
  • Do not dispose of undiluted chemicals on site.
  • Recycle containers where possible, or deliver to an approved waste management facility.
  • Do not burn empty containers or product.

Safety Directions:

  • Avoid contact with eyes and skin.
  • Do not inhale spray mist.
  • When preparing the spray, wear elbow-length PVC gloves and a face shield or goggles.
  • Wash hands, arms, and face thoroughly with soap and water after use and before eating, drinking, or smoking.
  • Wash gloves, face shield or goggles, and contaminated clothing after each day’s use.

Resistant Weeds Warning:

  • AC Sporo 745 Herbicide is a Group 0 chlorocarbonic acid herbicide. Some naturally occurring weed biotypes resistant to Group 0 herbicides may exist. Resistant individuals can dominate a weed population if the same herbicide group is used repeatedly. Rotate herbicide groups as part of a resistance management strategy.

First Aid:

  • If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or the Poisons Information Centre. Phone Australia 131 126.
  • For further information, refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
