Lontrel Herbicide is a member of the pyridines group of herbicides. The product has the disrupters of plant cell growth mode of action. Clopyralid is in the picolinic acid family of herbicides, which also includes aminopyralid, picloram, triclopyr, and several less common herbicides. When used as directed, Clopyralid does not affect grasses.

Clopyralid is known for its ability to persist in dead plants and compost and has accumulated to phytotoxic levels in finished compost.  Such compost or mulch made from plant material treated with Lontrel 750 SG may cause damage to susceptible crops and plants. The fastest residue breakdown will occur under good soil moisture and warm conditions, which promotes microbial activity where significant rain has fallen, with regular soil wetting over an extended period of time. Plant back periods can be found in the directions of use label.
