Queensland Blue Couch Seed (agriCOTE Enhanced)

Queensland Blue Couch (Digitaria didactyla) is a very popular choice for home-owners in the warmer parts of Australia.  It is known for its low growing lush coverage, which provides a soft, weed resistant lawn.  It is a very soft, deep blue-green, fine textured grass that has good drought tolerance once its roots have grown deeply.  It does not thatch up like many other warm climate grasses.

AgriCote is a tailored seed coating treatment applied to Queensland Blue Couch that combines all the AgriCote technologies into one high performing seed coat that promotes faster moisture uptake by the seed and better establishment.

Description

Queensland Blue Couch Seed (agriCOTE Enhanced)

Queensland Blue Couch (Digitaria didactyla) is a very popular choice for home-owners in the warmer parts of Australia.  It is known for its low growing lush coverage, which provides a soft, weed resistant lawn.  It is a very soft, deep blue-green, fine textured grass that has good drought tolerance once its roots have grown deeply.  It does not thatch up like many other warm climate grasses.

Queensland Blue Couch has a similar appearance to a genuine Couch grass, but with a wider leaf blade which tapers into a pointy tip.  It has an attractive blue green colour which can turn slightly purple in the Queensland Winter.

Queensland Blue was made popular in Southern Queensland due to its optimum performance and suitability to that region, although it is also highly suitable to many other regions around Australia. Queensland Blue Couch has also been a long time and often used grass for home lawns for the Australian home, it has a lovely soft texture, mows beautifully with a cylinder mower or rotary, is less aggressive than real couches, and doesn’t thatch up nearly as quickly as Couch grass.  Once mowed, it never leaves an unsightly appearance of cut and exposed stolons (runners) like other lawns may do.  Queensland Blue Couch, is neither from Queensland, nor is it a Couch.

Queensland blue couch is an excellent choice to produce a soft, fine leaf grass lawn which as its name suggests has a blue-green tinge. It is ideal for tropical and subtropical areas, where it grows well on a wide range of neutral to acid soils.

  • Increased seed size and weight allows for easier more precise spreading.

Seed Details: 100% Queensland Blue Couch Seed (not a blend)

In Queensland, it is tolerant of very acid soils (pH 5.5 and lower) and is a very dominant grass when compared to other warm season varieties, particularly under low fertility conditions. It has good drought tolerance and recovers well from drought following rainfall events.

QLD blue couch doesn’t have great shade tolerance like other warm season varieties, however is tolerant of temporary waterlogging.

Queensland Blue Couch is not the same as normal couch.  Couch has stolons and rhizomes, whereas Queensland Blue Couch only has stolons.  It is slightly more shade-tolerant than couch but is not as resistant to wear, close cutting and dry weather. Blue couch makes a beautiful lawn and is best suited to southern coastal Queensland, the north coast of New South Wales and southern parts of Western Australia. It has higher nutritional requirements than normal couch and can be identified versus normal couch due to a 2 winged seed head. It doe not tolerate as many herbicides as green couch does (as it is not a couch species).  Planting from seed provides a quicker method of establishment than sprigs. The best time to establish it is spring or early summer.

Why is a Queensland Blue Couch Lawn so Good?

QLD Blue Couch is a common turf variety used for domestic and commercial lawns. It’s also been used extensively on sports fields and a variety of gardens and parks throughout Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Ipswich and the Northern Rivers regions.

Like other blue couches QLD Blue has an attractive blue green colour. It produces minimal seed heads compared to standard couch varieties meaning an easier to mow lawn for the home owner or commercial maintenance person.

QLD Blue is known for its low growing lush coverage, which not only gives the end user a strong, weed resistant lawn but also provides a nice soft feel. Compared to standard couch varieties (like Wintergreen) QLD Blue Couch doesn’t have the wear capabilities but it will recover quickly if damaged. It has good drought tolerance once its roots have grown deeply, however it can turn slightly purple during the Queensland winter.

Queensland Blue Couch is native to Australia, which is why it has been so successfully grown in the harshest environments. Queensland Blue Couch is widely found to be the lawn of homes in older, more established areas of South East Queensland (and should be considered if matching up to an existing lawn in these areas). This reliable variety has the ability to adapt to the harsh environment that South East Queensland offers up, and is best known for its rapid growth response after even small amounts of rain. Queensland Blue Couch was widely used for lawns that didn’t receive a lot of attention in the past. If you are looking for a prestige lawn, then Queensland Blue Couch can be manicured into a bowling green as well. Its open structure coupled with a soft blue/green leaf makes this grass a stand out.

How long does Queensland Blue Couch Seed take to germinate?

  1. Q How long does Queensland Blue Couch Seed take to germinate?
Asked by Marianne on October 23, 2024 10:54 am
    Answered by the admin

Queensland Blue Couch is known for being a relatively quick-germinating variety of couch grass. Under optimal conditions, you can expect germination within 10-14 days. However, several factors can influence this timeframe: (1) Soil temperature: Warmer soil temperatures (around 25°C) are ideal for germination. Cooler temperatures will slow down the process. (2) Moisture: Consistent moisture is crucial for germination. The soil needs to be kept damp but not waterlogged. (3) Seed quality: Fresh, high-quality seeds will germinate more quickly and reliably. (4) Seedbed preparation: A well-prepared seedbed with good soil contact will promote faster germination. It may take longer than two weeks if you're planting outside the optimal season (late September to late February). In cooler months, germination can take significantly longer.

  7. Q Does Queensland Blue Couch Seed seed store well and does it have a use by date?
Asked by Peter on January 19, 2024 8:57 am
    Answered by the admin

Queensland Blue Couch Seed does not have a best-before or expiry date. Seed is a living thing and, if possible, should be used as soon as possible. Store your seed in a dark, dry, cool location to avoid any unnecessary loss in quality. A cupboard or a drawer is normally sufficient for short-term storage (i.e., six months). If you intend to store your seeds for a longer period we recommend you store them in your fridge, this will dramatically increase the life of your seeds. Seeds should be put in an airtight container/jar with some desiccant/silica gel (if unavailable, an envelope filled with powdered milk or rice is a good alternative). Make sure not to freeze your seeds, if done incorrectly freezing can kill seeds instantly. When removing the seed from the fridge allow the container to come to room temperature before opening, this avoids condensation.

  8. How long after seeding can I use a selective herbicide weed and feed type substance ?

  9. Q How long after seeding can I use a selective herbicide weed and feed type substance ?
Asked by Peter McPhee on November 22, 2023 6:15 pm
    Answered by the admin

It is generally recommended to wait 6-8 weeks after Queensland Blue Couch germinates before applying a selective herbicide. This is because the new grass seedlings are still developing and more susceptible to herbicide damage. Using a herbicide too early can harm the seedlings and prevent them from establishing properly. Once the seedlings have had a chance to develop a robust root system, they will be more tolerant of herbicides.
