What is a foliar fertiliser?
A foliar fertiliser is a type of fertiliser applied directly to the leaves of plants, where it is absorbed by the tiny pores on the surface of the leaves, known as stomata. This differs from traditional fertilisers, which are applied to the soil and absorbed by the plant’s root system.
Why use foliar fertilisers?
Foliar fertilisers allow nutrients to be rapidly absorbed by the plant, as the formula doesn’t have to travel through the soil. This makes them an ideal choice for supplementing growth during critical stages or addressing nutrient deficiencies. They are most effective when used alongside a standard fertiliser.
Foliar fertilisers contain essential nutrients including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, as well as micronutrients like iron, zinc and manganese. These nutrients are dissolved in water to create a spray solution that can be applied straight to the plant’s foliage.
Foliar fertilisers vs standard fertilisers
- Application method: As standard fertilisers are applied directly to the soil, they come in different formats, including granular, liquid, and slow-release, allowing a variety of application methods. Foliar fertilisers are always applied as a liquid spray.
- Absorption rate: Soil-applied fertilisers can take time to absorb properly into the plant, especially if soil conditions are poor. Foliar fertilisers are absorbed quickly as they bypass the soil and enter the plant through the leaves. Soil-applied fertilisers are often used to provide nutrients over a longer period, whereas the life of a foliar fertiliser is shorter, necessitating more frequent application.
Benefits of using foliar fertilisers
- Faster absorption: Because of the application method, the fertiliser is quickly absorbed by the plant, as it doesn’t have to travel through the soil and up from the roots.
- Better uptake: Similarly, foliar fertilisers are more effectively absorbed by the plant, leading to improved growth and better plant health.
- Enhanced flowering, fruiting and vitality: Often, soil conditions can limit root nutrient uptake, which can be detrimental to fruit and flower development. Using a foliar solution that is easily absorbed, addressing these deficiencies, will help bolster growth.
How to use foliar fertilisers
To use foliar fertilisers in your garden, follow these steps:
- Mix the recommended amount with water according to the product label.
- Apply the solution using a spray bottle or garden sprayer, evenly coating the leaves of your plants, including the undersides where nutrient absorption is most effective.
- Repeat application as needed.
When is the best time to apply foliar fertilisers?
The best time to apply foliar fertilisers will depend on the needs of the plant and the environmental conditions at play. Generally, we recommend applying foliar fertiliser during cooler times of year, or in the early morning or late afternoon, to avoid leaf burn.
Foliar fertilisers are a valuable tool for Australian farmers and gardeners. While they can’t completely replace soil-applied fertilisers, they complement traditional methods, especially when addressing nutrient deficiencies or boosting growth during critical times.
