Bow and Arrow Herbicide

Bow and Arrow Herbicide provides outstanding control of various broadleaf weeds in turf. This is achieved via a combination of three ingredients: MCPA (2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid) as potassium salt, clopyralid as potassium salt, and diflufenican. In most contexts, this unique mixture provides extended, season-long weed control.

Active ingredients: MCPA at 300g/L, clopyralid at 20g/L, and diflufenican at 15g/L.

Comparable to: Surefire Multi Turf Herbicide (PCT) | Estate Herbicide (Syngenta) | Stadium Turf Herbicide (ADAMA) | Jolt Selective Herbicide (Barmac) | Spearhead Selective Herbicide (Bayer)

Pack sizes: 500mL and 10L

Bow and Arrow Herbicide BOW-ARROW Turf Culture

Description

Which broadleaf weeds does Bow and Arrow Herbicide target?

Bow and Arrow targets a wide variety of broadleaf weeds, including:

  • Bindii (also known as jo-jo, onehunga, bindy-eye, carpet burweed, common soliva, field burweed, and lawn burweed) [Soliva sessilis]
  • Capeweed (Arctotheca calendula)
  • Cat’s ear (also known as flatweed) [Hypochoeris radicata]
  • Creeping oxalis (Oxalis corniculata)
  • Cudweed (Gnaphalium spp.)
  • Plantain (Plantago lanceolata)
  • White clover (Trifolium repens)

Why choose Bow and Arrow over other herbicides?

Many broadleaf turf herbicides on the market cause rapid desiccation of weed leaves and shoots, and while this is beneficial to begin with, recovery often occurs from the root systems as time goes on. Compared to these herbicides, Bow and Arrow provides more comprehensive control over time due to its slow uptake, and has been shown to effectively prevent regrowth.

Where can Bow and Arrow Herbicide be used?

Bow and Arrow can be used to address weeds in most species of turf, however it has a few limitations:

  • Do not use Bow and Arrow Herbicide on bent grass or winter grass species, or on golf or bowling greens.
  • Be careful when using this product on kikuyu, carpet grass, or Queensland blue couch, as it may lead to transient discolouration.
  • Always conduct safety testing on a small area prior to large-scale application when treating certain buffalo grasses like ST-85, as varietal differences may lead to more prominent effects.

What is the application rate of Bow and Arrow Herbicide?

The application rate for Bow and Arrow Herbicide is 5L per hectare or 50mL in 2-5L of water per 100m2.

How long does Bow and Arrow Herbicide take to work?

Following application, it may take up to 6 weeks for Bow and Arrow to be effective and for total weed death to be observed – however, if you’re dealing with smaller weeds, it’s likely you’ll notice this sooner.

Diflufenican, one of the active ingredients in the herbicide, has residual effects in the soil. Do not over-seed treated areas within 3 months of application, as this may impede turf from establishing effectively.

Is Bow and Arrow safe for use around pets?

Like with any other herbicide, always remove pets from the area prior to spraying Bow and Arrow, as contact with or ingestion of the herbicide could lead to health complications. We advise keeping pets away from the treated area for at least 24 hours and only allowing re-entry once the spray has fully dried.

Features & Benefits

  • Provides outstanding broadleaf weed control.
  • Contains active ingredients MCPA, clopyralid, and diflufenican for unique multi-ingredient action and improved resistance management.
  • Requires very low application rates.
  • Has a non-ester formulation, which reduces the potential for off-target damage as there are no volatilisation issues present.
  • Follows one standard application rate across all settings.
  • Ensures superior turf safety for cool- and warm-season grasses.
  • Does not have an odour, making it an easy-to-apply product in all contexts.
  • Is a low Schedule 5 – Caution poison.
  • Does not require any additional surfactants for most weeds.

Have little success controlling clover and creeping oxalis in my kikuyu lawn using products like Amgrow sold through Bunnings. The weeds looked a bit sick for a while but then recover and the lawn grass was adversely affected. Only used one application of Bow and Arrow so far but the results are much better and all the weeds are dying off and the grass is unaffected. I’m confident further applications will totally eradicate the weeds

Directions Of Use

Click here for Bow & Arrow Herbicide directions for use.

Situation: Turf

Weeds Controlled: Broadleaf Weeds including; White Clover (Trifolium repens), Plantain (Plantago lanceolata), Capeweed (Arctotheca calendula), Cat’s ear / Flatweed (Hypochoeris radicata), Bindii (Jo-Jo, Onehunga) (Soliva sessilis), Cudweed (Gnaphalium spp.) & Creeping oxalis (Oxalis corniculata),

General use rate: 5L per hectare or 50mL in 2-5L of water per 100m2.

Mixing instructions:

  • Before use, shake the container of Bow and Arrow Herbicide well.
  • During application, continue to shake regularly to ensure the product is thoroughly mixed.
  • Only mix enough chemicals for one day of work at a time.

Application method

For effective weed control, it’s crucial to apply Bow and Arrow Herbicide evenly and at the correct rate. This also helps to minimise issues like product waste and drift, as well as burning of the lawn. This product is best applied using a boom sprayer rather than a hand or knapsack sprayer to ensure even coverage of the intended area.

The rate provided is based on an area (either per hectare or per 100m2), which aligns with the way directions are communicated on chemical product labels.

Tips for applying Bow and Arrow

  • Calibrate your sprayer using clean water to determine how much water it will emit over a known area of turf or land.
  • Maintain a consistent ground speed between testing and application to avoid using more or less product than intended.
  • Make sure your spray output is consistent during application by using the same pressure as you did during the calibration phase. Pressure can affect droplet size and flow rate.
  • Ensure the height of the spray boom from the ground accommodates the nozzle spacing, as this will guarantee uniform coverage and overlap. Running the boom too low can lead to unwanted streaks, whereas having it too high can cause uneven coverage or product drift.
  • Try using visual cues to demarcate the area and for proper overlap between passes. This will ensure you don’t miss areas or exceed application rates due to overlapping. To judge your overlap before applying, test the spray pattern on a concrete surface.
  • If you’re planning on spraying near obstacles like houses or flower beds, use a backpack sprayer or a boom with a spray skirt to reduce drift.

Adding surfactants to Bow and Arrow

Surfactants are recommended for hard-to-wet weeds, such as those that have waxy or oily leaf surfaces. When using surfactants, add them once you have mixed Bow and Arrow with water and your spray tank is close to full.

Rates are a general guide only. Before opening, carefully read Bow & Arrow Herbicide directions for use, precautionary and protection statements, storage and disposal, safety directions and first aid instructions. The product is designed for the particular purpose indicated on the label. Failure to use the product strictly as directed may be illegal, dangerous and render the product ineffective.

Asked by Russell on December 16, 2025 1:31 pm
    Answered by the admin

Bow & Arrow Herbicide does not specify Portulaca oleracea, also known as Purslane or Pigweed, as a weed controlled. As this is a succulent herb rather than a broadleaf weed, we cannot guarantee the efficacy of Bow & Arrow against Portulaca oleracea. Assuming the Portulaca oleracea is in a turf/domestic setting, there are not many on-label herbicides for this weed and situation. You could consider spot-spraying with a Glyphosate-based herbicide (Glyphosate will damage your lawn), or using a herbicide such as Kamba 750 Herbicide, Dicamba 500, or an Oxyflurofen-based herbicide. Please ensure you read the SDS and Label before purchase and use to confirm suitability for your situation & follow all manufacturers' guidelines.

  3. Q Is Bow & Arrow Herbicide safe to use on Zoysia grass?
Asked by Oliver on October 11, 2025 10:48 am
    A

Zoysia grass is not explicitly listed on the Bow & Arrow Herbicide product label as either tolerant or sensitive. Therefore, you may wish to conduct an 'off-label' test on a small, inconspicuous area to check for any damage or discolouration, before proceeding at your own risk.  For further clarification, contact the manufacturer, Turf Culture, on 1300 11 8873

  5. Q Does Bow and Arrow Herbicide damage Buffalo Turf?
Asked by Brett on September 28, 2025 10:13 am
    A

Bow and Arrow Herbicide is registered as safe for use on most common Buffalo turf varieties; however, the label contains a critical warning that it can cause damage to older 'ST' varieties (e.g., ST85). Therefore, the label recommends that if you are unsure of your exact Buffalo grass variety, you should test a small, inconspicuous area first and wait 7-14 days to check for any negative reactions before spraying the entire lawn. Please ensure you read the SDS and Label prior to purchase and use to confirm suitability for your situation & follow all manufacturer's guidelines. These are available under 'SDS and Technical' on the product page on our website.

The withholding period for Bow and Arrow Herbicide states, "Do not graze treated turf or cut any treated area (including turf clippings) for feeding to poultry or livestock for 14 days after application". As such, you would need to wait a minimum of 14 days after spraying with Bow and Arrow Herbicide before allowing cattle to graze the sprayed area. Please ensure you read the SDS and Label prior to purchase and use to confirm suitability for your situation & follow all manufacturer's guidelines. These are available under 'SDS and Technical' on the product page on our website.

Depending on the type of turf you have, you could consider the following options to control Chickweed in your lawn - Dicamba-M Herbicides (Ie Kamba-M), Casper, 3D Herbicide, Stature Turf Herbicide, Monument, Proforce Duke or Recondo Herbicide. Be sure to check that the selective chemical is suitable for use on your turf. For example, do not use Kamba M on Buffalo Turf, as severe damage or death may result.

Generally, you should apply the selective herbicide (Bow & Arrow) first, then wait for the recommended time (1-2 weeks) before applying the foliar fertiliser (LiquiMaxx GreenMaxx Fertiliser). This is because the herbicide needs to be absorbed by the target weeds to be effective. Applying fertiliser first could stimulate weed growth, making them more difficult to control. The fertiliser needs to be absorbed by the desirable plants to provide nutrients. If applied before the herbicide, the weeds might absorb some of the fertiliser, reducing its effectiveness on the desired plants.

Bow & Arrow Herbicide is not 'specifically' registered to control Flickweed (aka - Hairy bittercress, Nursery Weed, Common Bittercress and Splitting Jenny). However, it does claim to control a wide range of broadleaf weeds, which is likely to include bittercress. Herbicides with MCPA included (i.e. Bow & Arrow and Kamba M) are considered quite effective on swine cress weeds in most situations.

Bow & Arrow Herbicide (Diflufenican @ 15g/L, MCPA @ 300g/L & Clopyralid @ 20g/L)  and Surefire Buffalo Bindi & Broadleaf Weedkiller (Bromoxynil @ 200g/L & MCPA Ester @ 200g/L) are both selective herbicides registered for the control of various broadleaf weeds in certain lawn varieties. Both herbicides contain Bromoxynil; however, Bow & Arrow is a 3-way combination of actives, compared to only two in the Bindi & Broadleaf Weedkiller. Often, the combination of active ingredients has a synergistic effect, enhancing the potency of the herbicide. We can't advise if one is better, and both products are purchased frequently with good feedback. To determine which option best suits your needs, we recommend carefully reading the registered 'directions for use' for each product to ensure suitability for your situation. Rotation of selective herbicide actives is not required in a domestic lawn situation as resistance is highly unlikely.

Bow & Arrow Herbicide is a post-emergent herbicide recommended for actively growing weeds for best results. It can be applied as a spot spray or a whole lawn application. It will only target the existing weeds in the lawn and does not provide ongoing residual control. If there are existing weed seeds in the soil, these will germinate under suitable conditions. We recommend pre-emergent herbicides such as Spartan Herbicide, Barricade Herbicide, Oxafert or Echelon Duo Advanced Herbicide, Insecticide & Fertiliser for residual control.

The "directions for use" recommendation is to apply Bow & Arrow Herbicide to actively growing weeds when not stressed or when frost is imminent.   This indicates that warmer months of the year, i.e. spring/summer are the ideal times to apply.  Always read the 'directions for use' carefully before application.

Bow & Arrow Herbicide does not require additional surfactant for use on most weeds as it has a surfactant package included in the formulation.  If you are spraying hard-to-kill weeds (i.e. glossy or hairy leaves), the plants are stressed, or conditions are not challenging (i.e. hot and dry), additional surfactant would be recommended.

Tips For Use

Bow and Arrow Herbicide is an effective, easy-to-use weedkiller often employed to control broadleaf weeds in turf. To ensure you have a safe experience using it in your chosen setting, follow these top tips.

When to use Bow and Arrow Herbicide

To guarantee best results, always use Bow and Arrow on actively growing weeds and turf. In Australia, this is often during the springtime, when weeds begin to emerge from their dormancy. Summer is also a good time to apply this herbicide, however be cautious not to attempt weed control in extreme temperatures.

Rain will mitigate the benefits of using Bow and Arrow for weed control, so do not attempt to apply this herbicide within 4 hours of expected rainfall to avoid the need for reapplication. Similarly, it should not be applied in frosty or snowy conditions.

For the best chance at weed eradication, do not mow the affected area for 3 to 4 days both before and after applying Bow and Arrow.

Protection advice
