Why is Nitrogen, Potassium, Sulphur and Iron important in Turf;

(N) Nitrogen – Nitrogen is largely responsible for the growth of leaves on the plant and is the most talked-about nutrient when it comes to lawns and is usually the highest percentage of your NPK ratio.  Nitrogen usually comes in the following forms: Ammonium, Controlled release (synthetic) and Urea.  Lawns love Nitrogen, but it is important to strike a balance between strong leaf growth and strong roots capable of supporting it as well.

(K) Potassium – Potassium is a nutrient that helps the overall functions of the plant perform correctly. Potassium is an essential macro-nutrient used in the largest quantities by plants for vigour and growth. Potassium comes in the form of Sulphate as soluble potash which helps grass withstand drought and disease. It also helps the plant to more efficiently use Nitrogen.

(S) Sulphur – In the absence of sulphur, turfgrass exhibits chlorosis that frequently occurs as an intense yellow colour.  In mild cases, this may be confused with nitrogen deficiency or even iron deficiency.  Sulphur enhances colour, density and growth.  Sulphur helps nitrogen (N) to be used efficiently due to its direct relationship with nitrogen.  Turfgrass fertilised with higher quantities of nitrogen show an increased response to sulphur.  It has been reported that when 5.4 kilograms of nitrogen are used, there is a requirement for 3.6 kilograms of potassium oxide and 1.6 kilograms of sulphur.

(FE) Iron – Iron is necessary for chlorophyll formation, good colour, and resistance to disease.  Since iron is very widely used for cosmetic greening, it is unusual to find any deficient turf, but symptoms can include yellowing, spindly leaves.  Most golf courses and bowling greens have a high level of iron in the soil because of historic usage.  This can lead to a lock-up of potassium and phosphorus and has the tendency to promote a black layer when high levels of sulphur are present.

Directions Of Use

Application Rate: Apply at 250 kg per hectare (2.5kg per 100m2)

General Application Instructions:

  • Apply to dry turf or foliage and irrigate thoroughly after application.
  • Iron and other plant nutrients can cause staining of sidewalks.
  • Sweep walkways prior to irrigation.
  • Walkways should be dry at the time of application.
  • Keep away from pools, ponds, etc.
  • Do not contaminate potable water where the fertiliser is being spread.
  • Do not apply with a drop-type spreader. Drop spreaders are gravity-fed and drop fertiliser straight downward in neat rows with a great deal of accuracy. The grinding action of these spreaders destroys the coating of the urea and will increase burn potential.

Spreader Settings:

These suggested spreader settings are not intended to replace your normal calibrations. Calibrate your spreader before applying the product.

    Answered by the admin

    Six Iron Professional Fertiliser 20-0-16 (6% Fe) is a premium product suitable for general sports turf areas, golf courses, parks, landscapes and domestic turf areas. There is no reason Six Iron could not be used on Horse Pastures, but the high application rate would be an expensive option. It has no withholding period if applied as per directions of use. The recommended application rate is 250kg per hectare (6 hectares would require 1,500 kilograms). Incitec Pivot CK88 may be another more economical alternative you may want to consider.
