Description
Initiator Systemic Plant Insecticide and Fertiliser tablets combine 200 g/kg imidacloprid with a balanced slow-release fertiliser. As a systemic plant insecticide and fertiliser, Initiator protects newly planted and established trees, shrubs and ornamentals from insect damage. Moreover, it feeds the root zone during establishment. Growers place one tablet in the soil at planting, so the plant takes up both the insecticide and the nutrients.
Environmental Science AU Pty Ltd (Envu) registers Initiator for roses, azaleas, lillypillies, potted palms, magnolias and eucalyptus trees. The tablet controls or reduces damage from aphids, scale, mealybugs, psyllids, azalea lace bug and scarab beetles. Because imidacloprid is a Group 4A insecticide, it acts on sucking and chewing pests through the plant’s sap. As a result, beneficial predatory insects stay unharmed, since the product never contacts the foliage.
Why choose Initiator systemic plant insecticide and fertiliser?
Initiator suits nursery stock, revegetation, carbon farming, plantations and landscaped sites. It needs no mixing, measuring or spraying. Therefore, operators apply it quickly during normal planting work. The slow-release fertiliser delivers nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium straight to the absorptive roots.
Guaranteed minimum fertiliser analysis:
- Total Nitrogen (N): 5.6% (3.85% slow release, 1.75% as ammonium nitrate)
- Total Phosphorus (P): 5.4% (2.6% as calcium phosphate, 2.8% slow release)
- Potassium (K): 4.2% (slow release)
- Magnesium (Mg): 1.4% (slow release)
Initiator Tablets Insecticide and Fertiliser FAQ’s
Q. How does Initiator work?
A. Initiator releases imidacloprid and fertiliser into the soil. The plant draws both up through its roots. Insects then die or stop feeding when they attack the treated plant.
Q. Which pests does Initiator control?
A. Initiator controls aphids, scale, mealybugs, psyllids and azalea lace bug. It also controls scarab beetles and chrysomelid leaf beetles. In addition, it suppresses autumn gum moth and light brown apple moth.
Q. How many tablets do I use?
A. Use one tablet per metre of plant height for roses, azaleas, lillypillies, palms and magnolias. For eucalypt seedlings, use one tablet per tree. Space several tablets evenly around plants taller than one metre.
Q. When will I see results?
A. Initiator tablets need soil moisture to release their active ingredient. Therefore, irrigate the plant after you apply the tablet. Keep up regular watering for two to three months for best results.
Q. Is Initiator safe for beneficial insects?
A. Yes. You place the tablet in the soil, not on the foliage. As a result, predatory and beneficial insects avoid contact with the product.

We were advised by our Landscape gardener that Initiator could help with the damage from borers to our extensive Murraya hedge. Too early to tell yet but easy to apply and we’re hopeful of a good outcome.

In 2024 some of my coastal moorts, platypus eucalypt, were suffering from an infestation of leaf miner. The drought didnt help at all. I spent weeks removing the worms off the leaves which gave the trees some respite. I had seen a friend plant hundreds of these trees 10km away and after 3 years they were up to three metres high and absolutely thriving and healthy. My friend had been using Initiator for over 20 years, so I took his advice. He gave me enough tablets to make a start on the fight against the bugs in April and with lots of irrigation I started to notice a dramatic reduction in the onset of the leaf miner just before winter. The trees looked healthy and new growth was rampant. As soon as my own shipment arrived, I placed a second tablet under each tree. Now nearly all of the previously affected trees are free from the pests, and some get new signs of minor infestation, but they are controlled within 24 hours and the tree kicks on unaffected. I am very pleased with the results. The initiator fertiliser strengthens the tree immunity if you can call it that. The pesticide ingredient kills the bugs very rapidly. I have put a tablet on my small yet to flower WA flowering gums to get them going also. Will stop at least a year prior to them approaching flowering stage so as to not affect bees and honey eater birds.

Live in a sub-tropical area, so pests can be rampant. I use these on a variety of plants for the 1st 3 years (by when they should be ok to look after themselves) to keep the pests at bay. It’s an economical way to buy them and I can share with friends/family.
