Cydectin Platinum Dual Active LV Pour-On for Beef and Dairy Cattle CYDECTIN-PLATINUM Virbac

Description

Cydectin Platinum Pour-On is a dual-active endectocide for cattle. It contains 200 g/L levamisole and 10 g/L moxidectin, plus 188 g/L diethylene glycol monobutyl ether as the solvent. Together, these actives treat and control gastrointestinal worms and existing cattle tick infestations in beef and dairy cattle. Virbac developed it for herds facing macrocyclic lactone resistance. Moreover, it works against worm strains with single or dual resistance to the macrocyclic lactone family. Levamisole also controls susceptible benzimidazole-resistant strains. As a result, producers gain a reliable option when single active pour-ons no longer perform.

How Cydectin Platinum Pour-On controls resistant worms

Moxidectin belongs to the macrocyclic lactone family. Levamisole belongs to the imidazothiazole family. Because the two actives attack worms through different modes of action, the combination clears strains that resist either chemical alone. Therefore, it targets nematodes with single or dual resistance to abamectin, doramectin, ivermectin or moxidectin. It also targets strains resistant to levamisole.

The product controls adult and larval (L4) stages of the major cattle worms. These include barber’s pole worm, small brown stomach worm and stomach hair worm. It also covers black scour worm, small intestinal worm and nodule worm. In addition, it controls existing cattle tick (Rhipicephalus australis) infestations, including strains resistant to organophosphates, synthetic pyrethroids, amitraz and fluazuron.

Persistent activity and pasture benefit

A single application gives 14 days’ persistent protection against reinfection with sensitive Haemonchus placei, Trichostrongylus axei and Ostertagia ostertagi. Furthermore, new pasture contamination drops for 21 to 35 days after treatment. The formulation is also rainfast from two hours after application. Consequently, sudden rain does not reduce its performance.

FAQs

Q. What does Cydectin Platinum Pour-On control?

A. It controls gastrointestinal worms and existing cattle tick infestations. This includes strains resistant to single active endectocides. It also controls levamisole-resistant and benzimidazole-resistant worm strains.

Q. Which cattle can I treat?

A. You can treat beef and dairy cattle. However, do not treat calves under six weeks old. The label rules it out for that age group.

Q. What is the dose rate?

A. The dose rate is 1 mL per 20 kg liveweight. This delivers 0.5 mg/kg moxidectin and 10 mg/kg levamisole. Apply it along the backline from the withers to the tail.

Q. Is it safe with vaccines and mineral supplements?

A. Yes. You can use it at the same time as vaccines and injectable mineral supplements. However, do not use it with other pour-ons.

Q. How soon can I slaughter treated cattle?

A. The meat withholding period is 7 days. The export slaughter interval is 20 days. Always confirm the current ESI before treating cattle for export.

Q. How does Cydectin Platinum help with resistance management?

A. It combines two unrelated actives, moxidectin and levamisole. Because each active works differently, worms that survive one are usually killed by the other. Therefore, it clears strains with single or dual resistance to macrocyclic lactones and levamisole. However, resistance can develop to any chemical. So rotate actives, dose to the heaviest animal, and avoid underdosing to protect long-term efficacy.

Q. Is an applicator included with Cydectin Platinum?

Yes, for most pack sizes. The 2 L, 5 L, 7 L and 10 L packs include the Cydectin Platinum applicator. However, the 1 L pack is a graduated squeeze bottle, so it does not need a separate applicator.

General Instructions

  • Cydectin Platinum is a low-volume pour-on.
  • Apply it along the top of the back from the withers to the base of the tail.
  • The dose rate is 1 mL per 20 kg liveweight.
  • This delivers the correct dose of 0.5 mg/kg moxidectin and 10 mg/kg levamisole.

For all pack sizes except 1 L, use only the Cydectin Platinum applicator supplied with the product. Read the applicator care instructions before use. The product is not compatible with other applicators. Do not clean the applicator with water. Clean it with vegetable oil and empty it to store. Check the accuracy of dose delivery regularly.

For the 1 L pack only, remove the chamber cap and squeeze the bottle to fill the dose chamber to the required amount.

Weigh a representative sample of animals before treatment, using scales or a weighband. Base the dose on the heaviest animal in each group. Do not underdose. Where group size varies widely, draft into two or more lines by bodyweight to avoid excessive overdosing.

Re-treatment Interval

  • Do not re-treat animals for 20 days after the last treatment.

Critical Comments

  • Contraindicated for use in calves less than 6 weeks old.
  • Use with caution. Do not use on animals that are severely stressed or in ill health.
  • Exercise care when handling weak, pregnant and young animals to avoid unnecessary stress.
  • Do not exceed the recommended dose rate. Doses of three or more times the recommended dose can cause levamisole toxicity, so estimate weights carefully.
  • Dehydrated animals may be more susceptible to toxicity.
  • Do not mix with other chemicals. Do not use at the same time as other pour-ons.
  • On rare occasions, skin reactions may occur at the application site. It is not recommended to treat cattle shortly before showing.
  • Treatment of cattle ticks does not protect from new infestations. Some engorged females continue to drop for up to three days after the first treatment and may lay viable eggs. Take this into account when planning a strategic control program.

Rates are a general guide only. Before opening, carefully read Cydectin Platinum Pour-On directions for use, precautionary and protection statements, storage and disposal, safety directions and first aid instructions. The product is designed for the particular purpose indicated on the label. Failure to use the product strictly as directed may be illegal and dangerous, and render the product ineffective.

Questions and answers from customers

From what age or weight can calves be treated with Cydectin Platinum Pour-On for Cattle?

  1. Q From what age or weight can calves be treated with Cydectin Platinum Pour-On for Cattle?
Asked by Peter Nottage on May 30, 2026 9:14 am
    Answered by the admin

Cydectin Platinum Pour-On is contraindicated in calves less than 6 weeks old. The label does not specify a minimum weight for treatment; the dose is calculated at 1 mL per 20 kg live weight, regardless of age (provided the calf is at least 6 weeks old). As with all groups, dose should be based on the heaviest animal in the mob and animals should be weighed or weight-banded before treatment to ensure accuracy.

The Cydectin Platinum Dual Active LV Pour-On label addresses the safety of concurrent use with vaccines (such as Websters 5 in 1 B12 or Websters 7 in 1) and mineral supplements (such as Multimin). However, it does not specifically mention "blooding" for Redwater. 5. Q Does Cydectin Platinum Pour-On for Cattle control cattle ticks?
Asked by Terrance Mccullough on February 25, 2024 10:15 am
    Answered by the admin

Cydectin Platinum Pour-On for Cattle is now registered to be effective against existing moxidectin-sensitive cattle tick infestations ((Rhipicephalus australis (Boophilus microplus)). Cydectin Platinum Pour-On for Cattle controls existing sensitive and resistant cattle tick infestations. Treatment does not protect from new infestations; some engorged females continue to drop for up to three days after the first treatment, and these may lay some viable eggs.

  6. Does Cydectin Platinum Pour-On for Cattle control lice? It's not listed on the drum!

  7. Q Does Cydectin Platinum Pour-On for Cattle control lice? It's not listed on the drum!
Asked by Stu on August 8, 2022 2:41 pm
    Answered by the admin

Cydectin Platinum Pour-On for Cattle is not registered for or has claims to control sucking biting lice as part of its registration, so it can't be recommended for that purpose.  This is to do with the registration the manufacturer submitted to the APVMA, as it only lists claims to control gastrointestinal parasites in beef and dairy cattle and no other external parasites.

Note though that Cydectin Platinum Pour-on and the original Cydectin Pour-on are both made from Moxidectin which is the ingredient that targets lice.  Platinum also includes levamisole to target resistant strains of internal worms.
