I have accidentally poured Acatak on my house cow. I read that it says don’t use on cows when we intend to use the milk for human consumption now or in the future, but that can’t mean for the life of the milking cow, surely?? I could get ten years out of her, is it that poisonous that it will hang around that long??

Any of the pour-on tick treatments that contain Fluazuron (i.e. Oztik, Acatak, TickPro) all have the restraint and withholding period that states 'do not use on cattle which are producing or may in the future produce milk for human consumption.'  You might like to contact the manufacturer of Oztik Pour-On (Jurox 1800 023 312) to discuss further. However, as the product's label is a legal document approved by the APVMA, we expect the advice on the label to stand as correct and will need to be adhered to.

A single treatment can provide up to 12 weeks of protection from cattle ticks. Under other conditions where cattle tick pressure is very high or if cattle are returned to paddocks with high tick numbers, this protection period may be less than 12 weeks. In this instance, the minimum retreatment interval must not be less than six weeks from the previous treatment and no more than three applications per year. A six-week retreatment interval does not mean the cattle must be treated every six weeks. Instead, they should be done when ticks are seen again on the cattle.

Tips For Use

Administration:

  • Oztik Pour-On is a tick development inhibitor and kills ticks progressively.
  • It can take 2 to 3 weeks for cattle to be visibly free of ticks. No additional treatment is necessary during that time, even on heavily infested animals.
  • The development inhibiting effect of Oztik Pour-On commences within 3 days of treatment.
  • Oztik Pour-On is not suitable for cleaning cattle moving into ‘gazetted’ cattle tick areas.
  • Oztik should be applied strategically, initially at the onset of the tick season, preferably prior to tick activity.
  • Re-treat when ticks are first seen, but not less than 6 weeks from the previous treatment.
  • Maximum number of treatments per year: 3.
  • Oztik is absorbed orally via grooming and through the skin.
  • Oztik should be applied in two 7cm wide bands, either side of the spine from shoulder to tail. This maximises absorption and ensures effective concentrations of Oztik are reached.
  • There is no need to treat suckling calves. Calves will receive adequate protection from their mother.
  • The Pour-On Applicator must be suitable for use with harsh chemicals (Sentroprene Hose, Seals & Washers).  Do not use standard pour-on applicators.
  • Dose individuals according to the heaviest animal in the mob.  Do not under dose.
  • The weight of cattle should be determined by either scales or a weigh-band.
  • A reduced length of protection may occur in cows which are suckling calves.
  • Oztik Pour-On should not be applied to show cattle as a light scurfiness may be visible for some time after treatment.

Retreatment Interval:

  • 6 weeks from the previous treatment.

Restraint:

  • Do not use on cattle which are producing or may in the future produce milk for human consumption.

Contraindications:

  • This product is contraindicated for use on pregnant cows within 6 weeks of calving to avoid handling stress.

Safety Directions:
