Trelona Termite Bait TRELONA BASF

Description

Trelona Termite Bait is a compressed, ready-to-use subterranean termite bait containing 5 g/kg Novaluron, a Group 15 insect development inhibitor. Manufactured by BASF Australia Ltd, Trelona Termite Bait controls key subterranean termite species, including Coptotermes acinaciformis, Mastotermes darwiniensis, and Schedorhinotermes spp., and protects structures through progressive colony elimination.

Novaluron disrupts chitin synthesis, which prevents termites from completing the moulting process. Because colony members moult at different stages, the effect on the colony is progressive rather than immediate. Sustained consumption of bait can cause a significant decline in colony numbers and, when bait remains continuously available, can result in total colony elimination.

How Trelona Termite Bait Works with the Advance Termite Bait System

Trelona is designed for use with the Advance Termite Bait System (ATBS). The ATBS station holds up to 248 grams of bait (two cartridges) and is constructed from durable, high-impact plastic. Stations are installed at approximately 3 metre spacings around the structure to be protected. The system supports two application methods:

Application Method Bait Installation Inspection Interval (Pre-Interception) Inspection Interval (Post-Interception)
Monitoring Added after termite interception 8 to 12 weekly 4 to 8 weekly
Active on Application Two cartridges installed at setup 3 to 6 monthly 6 to 8 weekly

Replace any cartridge with greater than 50% consumption. Once the colony has been eliminated, return to the standard monitoring inspection cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions About Trelona Termite Bait.

Why Choose Trelona Termite Bait for Colony Elimination?

Trelona uses BASF’s patented Puri-Cell bait technology, a compressed cellulose matrix that is highly palatable to all key Australian termite species. Laboratory stability studies confirm the active ingredient and bait matrix remain stable for up to 10 years in appropriate storage, while field trials demonstrate that installed cartridges stay effective and palatable for up to 3 years post installation.

Additionally, Trelona and ATBS are specifically designed for use alongside the Termidor range of products. Where construction constraints limit the reach of soil-applied termiticides, or in areas of high termite risk, a combined Trelona baiting and Termidor soil treatment system provides the most thorough structural protection.

Trelona bait cartridges require no water addition during installation and can be handled using disposable gloves.

How long does Trelona bait last once installed in the ground?

BASF field stability trials across northern and eastern Australia confirm that Trelona cartridges remain palatable and effective for up to 3 years after installation in ATBS stations. Laboratory studies on the active ingredient and Puri-Cell matrix show stability of up to 10 years when stored under appropriate conditions. There is no fixed label requirement to replace uneaten cartridges, although an annual visual assessment for mould or water damage is recommended.

Does Trelona Termite Bait control Mastotermes darwiniensis?

Yes. Trelona is registered for use against Mastotermes darwiniensis, one of Australia’s most destructive termite species. BASF conducted mini-house elimination trials targeting Mastotermes darwiniensis colonies, and the results confirmed 100% colony elimination. In areas where this species is present, or during warmer months, inspections should be carried out more frequently than the standard schedule.

Do I need to add water when installing Trelona bait cartridges?

No. Trelona bait cartridges are compressed and ready to use straight from the packaging. Simply insert the cartridge into the ATBS station. This removes a common preparation step associated with other baiting systems and reduces the risk of incorrect mixing or dilution. Disposable gloves must be worn during handling to prevent human scent contamination that may deter termites from feeding.

Can Trelona be used alongside a Termidor soil treatment?

Trelona and the ATBS are the only baiting systems specifically designed for combined use with the full Termidor range, including Termidor Residual, Termidor HE, and Termidor Foam. Where construction design limits access for soil treatment, or where the termite risk is high, a combined approach provides both a perimeter bait interception system and a chemical soil treated zone. Your pest management professional can design a treatment plan that uses both technologies for maximum structural protection.

Got these to replace an Exterra system which failed to keep termites out from my home even though it was professionally monitored.

I will be saving a lot of money by installing these myself and make sure to follow recommended specifications and monitor accordingly.

Fingers crossed they work. When I had questioned I emailed BASF and Leigh was very prompt to answer all my concerns.

  • The first inspection post-installation may also be sooner (4 weeks post-installation) should the structure be under attack.
  • These stations should be inspected at 4-8 weekly intervals and replenished as required.
  • Trelona may be installed as a monitoring system with bait added once termite activity is observed within the station or as an active system on application with Trelona added during installation.

Application:

  • This product is intended for use in an ongoing program of management and control of subterranean termite colonies in the ground around and under any type of building or other structure.
  • Trelona may be used as part of a traditional monitoring and baiting program or may be installed immediately with the installation of Advance Termite Bait System (ATBS) stations to provide an active system on application (Active on Application).
  • Disposable gloves must be worn whilst handling bait cartridges to avoid contamination that may deter termites.

Active on Application:

  • Trelona may be applied as an ‘active on application’ system.
  • During station installation, two 124 g Trelona bait cartridges should be added to each ATBS bait station. Station.
  • Inspections should be carried out at 3-6 monthly intervals until termites are intercepted.
  • Note, during warmer months or in areas where Mastotermes darwiniensis occur inspections may be carried out more frequently, the first inspection post-installation may also be sooner (1-2 months post-installation) should the structure be under attack.
  • Once termites intercept stations, active stations should be inspected on a 6-8 weekly basis and replenished as required.
  • Once the colony has been eliminated, 3-6 monthly inspection intervals may be reinstated.
  • Any cartridge with >50% consumption should be replaced.

Monitoring:

  • Trelona is designed for use with the Advance Termite Bait System (ATBS).
  • ATBS stations are designed to contain Timber Termite Monitoring Base’s (TMBs) and a Blank Termite Inspection Cartridge (TIC).
  • ATBS stations should be positioned in areas where termites are most likely to forage and placed at approximately 3m apart.
  • Station inspections should be carried out at 8-12 weekly intervals until termites are intercepted. Note, during warmer months or in areas where Mastotermes darwiniensis occur inspections may be carried out more frequently.
  • The first inspection post-installation may also be sooner (4 weeks post-installation) should the structure be under attack.
  • Once termites are intercepted, the TIC cartridge can be removed and replaced with a Trelona bait cartridge.
  • The Trelona bait cartridge can be added without the need for or addition of water.
  • These stations should be inspected at 4-8 weekly intervals and replenished as required.
  • Once a colony has been eliminated, replacement TMBs and TIC can be reinserted, and the monitoring program can be re-established.

Managing Termites within Structures:

  • Trelona may be utilised within compatible above-ground bait stations. Stations should be inspected on a 3-6 weekly basis and replenished as required.
  • Trelona and ATBS are compatible with and designed to be used in conjunction with the complete range of Termidor Products.
  • Termites within structures should be controlled and eradicated using either Trelona (within an above-ground bait station/s) or using Termidor Foam, Termidor Residual Termiticide and Insecticide and/or Termidor HE Residual Termiticide.
  • Where construction issues limit the efficacy of either Trelona, ATBS or a Termidor-treated zone or in areas of high risk, a combination system can be applied to protect the structure.

Adherence to the directions for use can increase the likelihood of colony elimination; however, conditions or circumstances beyond the control of the user may prevent or substantially delay colony elimination. Such conditions may include, but are not limited to, alternate non-bait food sources that reduce the extent to which the colony depends on the bait as a food source, excess moisture, low or high temperatures or abandonment of feeding on the bait by the colony.

Rates are a general guide only.  Before opening, carefully read Trelona Termite Bait directions for use, precautionary and protection statements, storage and disposal, safety directions and first aid instructions.  The product is designed for the particular purpose indicated on the label. Failure to use the product strictly as directed may be illegal, dangerous and render the product ineffective.

Trelona Termite Bait stations are designed for underground installation and handle normal soil moisture well - the bait itself isn't affected by high soil moisture as long as the station hole doesn't fill with standing water. In heavy-wet-season areas like Far North QLD, the key is good drainage rather than covering or shading the top. Dig the hole 50-80mm deeper than the station base to create a sump for excess water to drain away naturally. Install the station flush or just below ground level. Always follow the Trelona Termite Bait label and installation guide for your situation, and consult a pest management professional for further support.

Water pooling in Trelona Termite bait station holes due to poor drainage can potentially affect the baits. Excessive moisture might degrade the bait, reducing its effectiveness. It's important to ensure proper drainage around the stations to maintain their functionality. Regular monitoring and maintenance of the bait stations are recommended to address water accumulation issues.

  4. I use Trelona Termit Bait in my termite stations, and I check them monthly. Currently, I have 2 out of 26 traps that are very active. Additionally, the termite company that introduced me to Trelona set me up by using a bait and then placing two pieces of timber on top. At one station, the termites have been present throughout the Trelona Bait Station and are now consuming the timber pieces. I know it's important not to disturb them, but at what point do I give them new timbers or replace the Trelona Bait? If I pull the Trelona Bait out now, I'd be really disturbing the termites, and they may move out. I can't see if the Trelona unit is at 50% used, as there is a lot of mud crumb throughout the station.

Minimizing disturbance is important to the proper operation of the Termite Bait Station system. In this case, we recommend the removal of the timber as this is acting as a competing food source with the bait. You need to force the termites to feed exclusively on the Trelona bait matrix to eliminate the colony. Once the timber is removed, check the bait cartridges; if they appear more than 50% consumed or if they are too muddy to tell, gently pull them out and immediately slide fresh ones in. Close the lid gently and check again at your next scheduled inspection.

You do not need to add wood to your Trelona Bait Stations. The Trelona system is an "Always Active" design, which means the bait cartridges provided are already a highly attractive cellulose-based food source that contains the active ingredient. Adding untreated wood would be counterproductive, as you want the termites to feed exclusively on the lethal bait matrix. Install the bait cartridges as per the instructions, and the system is ready to work.

The Trelona Termite Bait Station has a top width of 150mm. When planning your installation, it is critical to remember that these stations are part of an ongoing monitoring program. They are designed to be inspected regularly to check for termite activity and to replenish the bait cartridges as they are consumed. Therefore, you must ensure the top of the station remains accessible for these essential service checks after being installed under the concrete slab. Please ensure you read the SDS and Label before purchase and use to confirm suitability for your situation & follow all manufacturer's guidelines. These are available under 'SDS and Technical' on the product page of the Specialist Sales website.

Yes, you can use a core saw to cut a hole in the concrete and insert the Trelona Termite Bait Station. However, if you plan to install the baits only without the Termite Bait Stations, results cannot be guaranteed, and this is not a recommended application method per the directions of use. Trelona Termite Baits are designed for use within the Trelona ATBS bait stations. Using them without the stations may reduce their effectiveness and protection.

We recommend getting someone in to look at the termite bait station as soon as possible. The white powder around the top is likely termite bait. As you are in a complex whereby Body Corporate takes care of termite control, we recommend contacting them and letting them know about the loose lid requesting they send someone out sooner than they had initially planned. If you are uncomfortable waiting for Body Corporate to send someone out, you can hire a private pest control company to come and look at the termite bait station. They can assess the situation and recommend the best course of action. It is important to remember that termites are a serious problem and should not be ignored. If you have any concerns about termites, it is always best to err on the side of caution and get them checked out by a professional.

Station inspections to check baits require the removal of the lid for a complete observation. The wearing of gloves is recommended. Station inspections should be carried out at 3-6 monthly intervals until termites are intercepted during warmer months or in areas where Mastotermes darwiniensisoccur, inspections may be carried out more frequently. The first inspection post-installation may also be sooner (1-2 months post-installation) should the structure be attacked. Once termites intercept stations, active stations should be inspected 6-8 weekly and replenished as required. Once the colony has been eliminated, 3-6 monthly inspection intervals may be reinstated. Tips For Use

General Instructions:

  • Novaluron is a slow-acting insect development inhibitor. Colony elimination is progressive, not immediate, and depends on sustained bait consumption.
  • Adherence to the Directions for Use increases the likelihood of colony elimination. Conditions such as alternate food sources, excess moisture, extreme temperatures, or abandonment of feeding by the colony may prevent or delay elimination.

Monitoring Method:

  • Install ATBS stations with Timber Termite Monitoring Bases (TMBs) and a Blank Termite Inspection Cartridge (TIC).
  • Inspect at 8 to 12 weekly intervals until termites are intercepted.
  • Once intercepted, replace the TIC with a Trelona bait cartridge and inspect at 4 to 8 weekly intervals.
  • During warmer months, or in areas where Mastotermes darwiniensis is present, inspect more frequently. If the structure is under attack, the first inspection may be as early as 4 weeks post-installation.

Active on Application Method:

  • Install two Trelona bait cartridges in each ATBS station at setup.
  • Inspect at 3 to 6 monthly intervals until termites are intercepted.
  • Once intercepted, inspect active stations at 6 to 8 weekly intervals and replenish as required.
  • After colony elimination, 3 to 6 monthly inspection intervals may be reinstated.

Cartridge Replacement:

  • Replace any cartridge with greater than 50% consumption.
  • Although there is no label requirement to replace uneaten cartridges on a fixed schedule, assess cartridges for mould or excess water damage and replace as needed. An annual assessment of bait cartridges is recommended.

Managing Termites within Structures:

  • Trelona may be used in compatible above-ground bait stations. Inspect these stations at 3 to 6 weekly intervals and replenish as required.
  • Trelona and ATBS are compatible with the Termidor range. Where construction constraints limit the performance of either the bait system or a Termidor treated zone, a combined system can be applied.

Insecticide Resistance Warning:

  • Trelona Termite Bait is a Group 15 insecticide. Some naturally occurring resistant biotypes may exist in any insect population. Repeated use of Group 15 insecticides may allow resistant individuals to dominate the population. Contact your local supplier, BASF Australia Ltd representative, or local agricultural department agronomist for resistance management guidance.

Protection of Wildlife, Fish, Crustaceans and Environment:

  • Very toxic to aquatic life. Do not contaminate wetlands or watercourses with this product or used containers.

Storage:

  • Store in the closed, original container in a dry, cool, well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight.

Disposal:

  • Dispose of unused baits or used bait stations by wrapping them in paper and putting them in the garbage. Used Trelona Baits may be disposed of at a waste management facility. Do not burn empty containers or used bait stations.

  • May irritate the skin. Will irritate the eyes. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. When using the product, wear disposable gloves. Wash hands after use.
