Conquest Picloram 240SL Herbicide is a member of the pyridine group of herbicides. The product has a ‘disrupters of plant cell growth’ mode of action. It contains the active ingredient Picloram at 240g/L. Picloram’s effectiveness as a broad-spectrum herbicide stems from its unique mode of action and its systemic properties.
- Auxin Mimicry: Picloram is a synthetic auxin, a plant hormone that regulates growth. It mimics natural auxins but is much more potent and persistent. This disruption of hormonal balance leads to uncontrolled and disorganised growth, eventually killing the plant.  Â
- Systemic Action: Picloram is readily absorbed by both the leaves and roots of plants. It’s then translocated throughout the entire plant, including the root system. This systemic action is crucial for controlling perennial weeds, as it ensures that even the underground parts are affected, preventing regrowth.  Â
- Broad Spectrum Activity: Because it disrupts a fundamental growth process, picloram is effective against a wide range of plant species, including many annual, perennial, noxious, and woody weeds. Different plants have varying sensitivities to picloram, but its potency allows it to control many that are resistant to other herbicides.  Â
- Persistence: Picloram can persist in the soil for extended periods, which can be both a benefit and a drawback. This persistence allows it to control weeds that germinate over time, reducing the need for multiple applications. However, it also means there’s a risk of affecting subsequent crops or non-target plants if not used carefully.
