What roundworm and liver fluke species does Primus LV Oral Drench target in sheep and cattle;

Primus LV is effective in sheep and cattle against the levamisole-susceptible strains of the following species:

  • Barber’s Pole Worm (Haemonchus spp.)
  • Stomach Hair Worm (Trichostrongylus axei)
  • Black Scour Worm (Trichostrongylus spp.)
  • Small Intestinal Worm (Cooperia spp.)
  • Thin Necked Intestinal Worm (Nematodirus spp.)
  • Hookworm (Bunostomum spp.)
  • Threadworm (Strongyloides spp.)
  • Large Mouthed Bowel Worm (Chabertia ovina)
  • Nodule and Large Bowel Worm (Oesophagostomum spp.)
  • Large Lungworm (Dictyocaulus spp.)
  • Small Brown Stomach Worm (Ostertagia spp.) in sheep and mature (adult only) Ostertagia spp. in cattle under 12 months of age.

Primus LV Oral Drench controls both susceptible and benzimidazole-resistant strains of Barber’s Pole Worm (Haemonchus species) and Black Scour Worm (Trichostrongylus species) in sheep. Primus LV is also effective against Liver Fluke (Fasciola hepatica) and assists in the removal of tapeworm segments in sheep and lambs. Internal parasites may develop resistance to drenches (anthelmintics).

What is the dose rate for Primus LV Oral Drench;

The application rate of Primus LV is;

  • Dose Rate: Sheep: 1mL per 10kg liveweight.
  • Dose Rate: Cattle: 5mL per 45kg liveweight.

Why choose Primus LV Oral Drench;

  • It contains the active ingredients Levamisole Hydrochloride & Oxyclozanide.
  • A Convenient one-drench controls roundworms, fluke, and tapeworms.
  • It saves time – no need to purchase several products.
  • Nil Milk Withholding Period for lactating dairy cattle, with no need to discard milk when treating for fluke.

What is Oxyclozanide in Primus LV Oral Drench, and why does it matter;

Oxyclozanide is an anthelmintic drug commonly used in veterinary medicine to control internal parasites in livestock. It is known for its effectiveness against various parasites, including liver flukes and gastrointestinal roundworms. Oxyclozanide is considered an excellent active ingredient for parasite control:

  • Broad-spectrum activity: Oxyclozanide has a broad-spectrum activity, which means it can target and control various types of parasites. It is particularly effective against liver fluke, which is responsible for causing significant economic losses in livestock.
  • High efficacy: Oxyclozanide has been proven to be highly effective against both mature and immature stages of parasites. It acts by interfering with the energy metabolism of parasites, resulting in their death or expulsion from the host’s body.
  • Limited resistance: Resistance development is a concern when using anthelmintic drugs. However, compared to some other anthelmintics, the development of resistance to Oxyclozanide has been reported to be relatively low. This is important for sustainable parasite control as it helps to preserve the effectiveness of the drug over time.
  • Safety profile: Oxyclozanide is generally well-tolerated by animals when used according to the recommended dosage. It has a low toxicity level and few reported side effects. However, it is always important to follow proper dosing instructions and consult a veterinarian before administering any medication.

Tips For Use

General Instructions:

  • It is advisable that a drench resistance test be conducted before any drench is used.
  • A drenching programme for your area should be established with your veterinary adviser.
  • If drench (anthelmintic) failure with this preparation is suspected, seek veterinary confirmation and notify the manufacturer.
  • Recommended doses should not be exceeded except under veterinary supervision.
  • Primus LV is fully effective at the recommended dose rates.
  • Primus LV temporarily stimulates some cattle for a short period after treatment, often accompanied by “friskiness.”

Restraints:

  • Do Not administer Primus LV to dogs or horses.
  • Do not use in ewes that are producing or may in the future produce milk that may be used or processed for human consumption.

Precautions:

  • Some scouring and slight loss of appetite may be seen in some animals for 1-2 days after treatment.
  •  In milking herds, a reduction in milk yield is to be expected for 2 days following handling for dosing.
  • Mustering and dosing of stock within 1 month of parturition (calving or lambing) is not recommended unless drenching is essential. Treatment at this time could result in stress-related adverse reactions.
  • Severely stressed stock, or stock in ill health are less tolerant of handling and dosing. Such procedures could result in stress-related diseases (e.g. pregnancy toxaemia, grass tetany, milk fever). If treatment is essential, drench with minimum disturbance and ensure adequate feed is available before and after treatment.
  • Exercise care in handling weak, pregnant and young animals to avoid unnecessary stress. Avoid yarding animals off-feed overnight, and ensure animals have access to water when yarded prior to drenching.
