Alben for Sheep Lambs & Goats (Albendazole) ALBEN Virbac

Description

Alben For Sheep, Lambs & Goats

Active Ingredient:  Albendazole @ 19g/L

Similar Or Comparable To Valbazen Broad Spectrum Sheep Lamb & Goat Drench (Intervet)

Alben For Sheep, Lambs & Goats is for the control of benzimidazole-sensitive mature and immature gastrointestinal roundworms, large lungworms, tapeworms and aids in the control of adult liver fluke in sheep, lambs and goats.

Alben For Sheep, Lambs & Goats is recommended for use in conjunction with other drenches that do not contain a benzimidazole active.  Useful as a goat drench where benzimidazole effectiveness still exists.

Alben Controls:

  • Barber’s pole worm – Haemonchus contortus
  • Stomach hairworm – Trichostrongylus axei
  • Small brown stomach worm – Teladorsagia (Ostertagia) spp
  • Black scour worm – Trichostrongylus spp
  • Small intestinal worm – Cooperia spp
  • Thin necked intestinal worm – Nematodirus spp
  • Nodule worm – Oesophagostomum columbianum
  • Large bowel worm – Oesophagostomum venulosum
  • Large mouthed bowel worm – Chabertia ovina
  • Large lungworm – Dictyocaulus filaria
  • Tapeworm – Moniezia expansa
  • Aids in the control of adult stages of Liver Fluke – Fasciola hepatica

Why Choose Alben?

  1. For your white drench rotation

Alben contains alben-dazole, a member of the benzimidazole (BZ or white) drench family. If white Drenches are still effective on your property, Alben provides an opportunity to rotate away from macrocyclic lactone (ML) or levamisole (clear) drenches.

  1. Broad-spectrum worm control

Alben will control all major roundworms that are susceptible to a BZ drench (except whipworms). These worms reduce overall productivity especially in young animals. Weight gains can be affected significantly. Alben also controls tapeworms and aids in the control of adult liver fluke.

  1. Registered for goats

There are very few drenches registered for use in goats.  Alben has been used safely by goat  Producers across Australia for many years and continues to be one of the more popular drenches used in the goat industry.

  1. Very safe

Albendazole is amongst the safest of all active ingredients used in oral drench formulations.

  1. Ovicidal

Albendazole is ovicidal, ensuring that roundworm eggs passed in the dung are rendered infertile, reducing the potential for further pasture contamination. To obtain the maximum benefit of this, sheep and goats should not be placed on clean pasture until 12 hours after drenching

Opening a drum of sheep drench (including Alben for Sheep, Lambs & Goats) does not affect its efficacy or the expiry date.  Providing the Alben is stored correctly when not in use (i.e. below 30oC (Room Temperature) with top secure & never frozen), it will be fine to use as per the best-before (expiry) date listed on the drums label.

Administering the correct dose rate of an anthelmintic drench such as Alben for Sheep, Lambs & Goats is essential for several reasons. (1) Efficacy: Anthelmintic drenches are medications used to treat and control parasitic infections in animals, particularly livestock. The correct dose rate ensures that the medication effectively eliminates or reduces the parasite burden. A lower dose rate may not effectively kill or remove all parasites, leading to treatment failure. On the other hand, using a higher dose rate than recommended can increase the risk of resistance development in parasites. (2) Animal Welfare: Parasitic infections can cause significant harm to animals, leading to poor growth, weight loss, anemia, reduced milk production, and general debilitation. Administering the correct dose rate ensures the parasites are effectively controlled, minimising the impact on animal health and welfare. (3) Resistance Prevention: Parasites can develop resistance to anthelmintic medications if they are exposed to suboptimal doses. Underdosing allows some parasites to survive, potentially passing their resistance genes to future generations. Using the correct dose rate, the anthelmintic can effectively eliminate many parasites, reducing the likelihood of resistance development. (4) Product Economy: Anthelmintic drenches are costly medications, and using the correct dose rate ensures they are used efficiently. Overdosing can lead to unnecessary product waste, increasing the treatment cost. Following the recommended dose rate, the product is used judiciously, providing effective parasite control without excessive expense. (5) Food Safety: Some anthelmintic medications have withholding periods, during which the treated animals should not be slaughtered for consumption. Adhering to the correct dose rate ensures the appropriate withholding period, minimising the risk of residues in animal products intended for human consumption.

As per Alben Broad Spectrum Anthelmintic For Sheep, Lambs & Goats, APVMA registered 'directions for use', which can be found on the product screen under the heading SDS & Technical; Dosage & Administration - Sheep, Lambs, and Goats is 1mL per 5kg bodyweight, roundworms, lungworms and tapeworms (under 15kg 3mL) or 1mL per 4kg bodyweight for adult liver fluke (under 15kg 4mL). A higher dose rate should be used when adult liver fluke infection exists concurrently with roundworm, tapeworm, and lungworm infections. Always read the 'directions for use' carefully before use.

Alben for Sheep Lambs & Goats is administered as required depending on the worm burden of the herd.  Just working on a set drenching schedule is not recommended, and repeat applications of Alben for Sheep Lambs & Goats will be required as the goats are exposed to more worm eggs from the pasture.  A worm test involving faecal egg counts is recommended so you know the worm burden of the herd and if a repeat drench is required.

Tips For Use

When to Use Alben.

  1. When rotating to a white drench

It is important to use effective drenches on your property. If white drenches still give effective Control on your property, then Alben is a useful tool to extend the life of the more powerful drenches available, including the macrocyclic lactone (ML) drenches (e.g. Cydectin® Oral Drench for Sheep).

  1. In combination with other drenches

Drenching with a combination of actives from different drench families provide the best tool to fight resistance in worms.  Producers wanting a cheap alternative to combination drenches could use an ML such as Cydectin Oral and then follow this immediately with a dose of Alben.

  1. Worm testing

Worm egg counts provide valuable information to optimise drench timing. Egg counts will show if a Drench is not required because of low worm numbers, but will also reveal production limiting worm infections long before clinical signs such as scouring or wasting are evident. A larval differentiation assay provides identification of the worm species present so that the optimal type of drench can be selected.

  1. Drench resistance testing

It is essential to understand the level of resistance to the various drench families on a particular property. Faecal egg count reduction tests (FECRTs) provide objective measurements of which drenches are working and which fall below the level of efficacy required for good worm control (i.e. 95% efficacy). FECRTs should be conducted every two to three years to monitor any changes in resistance levels.

How to Use Alben:

  1. Mixed with Naphthalophos

Naphthalophos and Albendazole can be used in combination to provide an effective alternative to ML based drenches. Albendazole mixes easily with Combat. *Off-label use, seek veterinary Supervision.

  1. Administration

Alben is applied orally using standard drenching equipment. Shake well before use. Dose the mob according to the heaviest animal by bodyweight in the group (ewes, wethers, rams, lambs). Where there is a large variation in size within the group, draft into two or more lines based on bodyweight. A representative sample of the animals should be weighed before treatment. Do not underdose.

Do not drench in marking cradles due to the increased risk of aspiration into the lungs. Check the accuracy of drenching equipment before and during use

General Instructions:

  • Shake well before use.
  • A representative sample of animals should be weighed before treatment.
  • Alben has ovicidal activity.  This reduces worm egg and fluke egg hatching.  For this to be of benefit, sheep should not be placed on clean pasture until 6 hours after drenching.  Resistance may develop to any drench.  It is advisable that a drench resistance test be conducted before any drench is used.
