    Effectiveness on Paspalum

    John Kent (verified owner)

8/3/2022 sprayed 3 acres plus hand spray under trees, orchard and boundary fence. Mowed lawn 7 days prior to application.
Used 5 x 60L tanks + 75 grams (1.75 packets of Destiny) Recommended is 50 grams Destiny for the yard. Also added 50ml ‘Spreadwet 1000’ per 60L water tank.
13 – 22/3/2022 still no visible effect on weeds. Kikuyu is starting to yellow but did not die.
Buffalo grass is unaffected. Grass still not mowed 2 weeks later as I want maximise poisoning of weeds.
27/3/2022 Paspalum totally unaffected, very healthy seed heads.
1/4/2022 second hand spray on test patch of paspalum. Applied full strength 0.525mg (0.5ml) in 1.5 water. Excessive rain prevented me from spraying 2-3 week interval, I could only spray 3.5 weeks later.
25/4/2022 observation; paspalum very healthy, 50% of seed heads are healthy, the other 50% look rotten.
After 7 weeks, there has been no success with this product on paspalum.

After consultation with the manufacturer of Destiny Herbicide (Bayer CropScience), the Paspalum identified in your photo was Paspalum Dilatatum. The Destiny label only lists Paspalum Notatum as the species that the chemical will suppress and reduce seed growth and has no effect on Paspalum Dilatatum. The recommended herbicide to remove Paspalum Dilatatum from Couch turf is Metric Herbicide (https://bit.ly/metric-turf).

Destiny Selective Turf Herbicide is only registered for use in turf. To the best of our knowledge, no selective herbicides are registered for safe use in domestic situations, such as garden beds, to control onion weed.

  2. Can I use Destiny Selective Turf Herbicide on Zoysia law to kill onion weed?

  3. Q Can I use Destiny Selective Turf Herbicide on Zoysia law to kill onion weed?

    Answered by the admin

Per the product label, Destiny Selective Turf Herbicide is safe in Buffalo Grass, Common Couch, Hybrid Couch and Kikuyu Grass. Do not use in QLD Blue Couch. While Destiny is not registered for use on Zoysia, it is generally considered safe for use on this type of grass. However, it is important to note that all herbicides can potentially damage turf, mainly if not used properly. For this reason, we recommend that you undertake a small trial of Destiny in a discrete area of your lawn before using it on a larger scale. To do this, apply Destiny to a small area of your lawn according to the directions on the label. Then, monitor the site for any signs of damage over the next several weeks. Do not use Destiny on your Zoysia lawn if you see any signs of damage, such as yellowing, browning, or dying grass. However, if the grass in the test area appears healthy after several weeks, you can safely use Destiny on your lawn. Please note that this is just a general recommendation. If you are concerned about using Destiny on your lawn, please consult a qualified lawn care professional.

As Destiny Selective Turf Herbicide is predominantly a foliar herbicide with less activity via the soil, there is minimal risk to elm trees in the area where the chemical is being applied.  As with all herbicides, do not apply under weather conditions or from spraying equipment that may cause spray to drift onto nearby susceptible plants.  The Destiny Selective Turf Herbicide should only be applied to the turf foliage as per the directions of use, avoiding the foliage of the Elm Trees.

Destiny Selective Turf Herbicide needs to be applied evenly at the recommended rates, so a boom spray is advised.  Application by hand sprayers is hard to achieve the same even coverage, and over-application of this chemical can damage the host species.

A 'rough' calculation you can use to convert boom spray rates to knapsack rates is - Add 1/100th of the rate on the weed table to 10L of water. Each 10L of mix will cover 100m2. If the rate in the weed table is 150g/ha, use 1.5gm/10L water/100m2.  You will need to find the application rate you need depending on the type of weed you are targeting, located in the directions for use.

  8. I need to spray Buffalo, Kikuyu and Couch grass lawn, about 1 hectare. Most will be cover sprayed and some spot sprayed. The target weeds are mostly paspalum, but other weeds are clover, crows foot and winter grasses. The strength of Destiny is confusing for Paspalum (which I assume is Bahia grass.) What strength do you recommend for Paspalum? Do you have any feedback from customers about its effectiveness or have you seen treated areas?

Bahia Grass (Paspalum Notatum) is also known as common baha, lawn paspalum &, Pensacola baha.  Due to the low mixing rate and the necessity for even coverage, Destiny Selective Herbicide is recommended to be applied via boom spray when targeting paspalum at 50gm per 10000m2.  If you wanted to use it as an 'off-label' spot spray, then a very general conversion would be 0.5gm per 10L Water to cover 100m2.  Note that this rate is for suppression of paspalum, and repeat applications will be required for better control.

Destiny Selective Herbicide is a specialist herbicide that gives excellent results in mixed lawns species controlling paspalum, clover and winter grass but does not claim control for summer grass or crowsfoot.

How to use:

  • Apply using ground-based equipment.
  • Ensure spraying equipment is properly calibrated before use.
  • Aim to achieve an even spray coverage of all weeds.
  • Do no overlap sprayed areas.
  • Apply with the boom no higher than 50 cm above the turf with flat fan nozzles and medium droplet size.

General Comments on Application:

  • Destiny will severely impact Poa annua (winter grass) therefore care should be taken if this is a desirable species.
  • Always apply with a non-ionic surfactant or Hasten at the recommended rate on the surfactant product label.
  • Apply to actively growing weeds and not to weeds under stress.
  • Destiny can be transferred or ‘tracked’ by equipment or foot movement.
  • To minimise this risk, irrigate treated areas after application, but allow at least 4 hours for chemical uptake.
  • Ensure spray tanks are cleaned thoroughly, according to label directions, after use.
  • Apply using ground-based application equipment. Use a water rate of 200 – 500 L/ha.
  • Always apply with a non-ionic surfactant or Hasten at the recommended rate on the spray adjuvant product label.
  • Apply to actively growing weeds and not to weeds under stress.
  • Destiny can be transferred or ‘tracked’ by equipment or foot movement.  To minimise this risk, irrigate treated areas after application, but allow at least 4 hours for chemical uptake.
  • Ensure spray tanks are cleaned thoroughly after use according to the sprayer clean-up instructions on the label.

General Instructions:

  • Destiny is a selective sulfonylurea herbicide. It is predominantly a foliar herbicide with less activity via the soil.
  • Destiny will not reliably control weeds that emerge after spraying.
  • Results are best under good growing conditions and application to weeds or turf under stress should be avoided.

Mixing:

  • Ensure that the spray tank is completely clean prior to mixing.
  • Half fill the spray tank with water, then with agitators in motion, add the correct amount of destiny directly into the spray tank.
  • Then add wetting agent or crop oil as recommended.
  • Complete filling the tank with agitators in motion.
  • Agitation must continue before and during spraying.
  • If the ph of water carrier is less than 5.5 Use a buffer solution to raise the ph to meet 7.0.
  • Do not mix Destiny with acid-forming compounds in the spray vat.
  • Do not leave spray mix standing in the vat overnight.

Application:

  • Ensure spraying equipment is properly calibrated before use.
  • Ensure that complete and even spray coverage of all weeds is achieved. Do not overlap sprayed areas.
  • Apply with the boom no higher than 50 cm above the turf with flat fan nozzles and medium droplet size.

Turf Safety:

  • Application to very dry sandy soils followed by soaking rainfall may cause turf damage.
  • Turf damage may also be increased in highly alkaline soils (soil pH >8.5 as determined by soil in water suspension).
  • Avoid application on the turf which is not yet established or which is under stress from environmental conditions.
  • Allow at least six weeks between the last application and overseeding with cool-season grasses for winter cover.

Re-Entry Period:

  • Do not allow entry into treated areas until the spray has dried.

Protection of Crops, Native and Other Non-Target Plants

  • Very toxic to aquatic plants and certain algae.
  • Do not apply under weather conditions, or from spraying equipment, that may cause spray to drift onto nearby susceptible plants/crops, cropping lands or pastures.
  • Do not replant any crop or ornamental to treated areas other than the turfgrass listed in the directions for use for a period of 12 months after application.

Protection of Livestock

  • Do not graze treated turf or feed turf clippings from any treated area to poultry or livestock.

  • Do not allow spray to drift onto adjacent areas which contain desirable plants.
  • Do not apply with spray droplets smaller than a medium spray droplet size category according to
  • Nozzle manufacturer specifications that refer to the same s572 standard or the bcpc guideline.
  • Do not apply when wind speed is less than 3 or more than 20 km per hour as measured at the Application site.
  • Do not apply during surface temperature inversion conditions at the application site.
