Description
Metric Herbicide
Active Ingredient: Metribuzin @ 400g/L
Metric Herbicide is for the selective post-emergent control of Crowsfoot Grass, Winter Grass and Summer Grass in certain turf species.
Metric is a unique selective turfgrass herbicide containing 400g/L of the active ingredient Metribuzin. It is the first Metribuzin-based herbicide in Australia to be registered for the control of crowsfoot grass in common couch grass turf and is labelled for use in Qld, WA, NT and the ‘Northern Rivers region of NSW only.
Metric is a selective post-emergent herbicide for application after the emergence of weeds, for the control of certain weeds in established turf. Metric is absorbed by roots, shoots and leaves of weeds.
What established turf species can Metric Herbicide be used on;
- Green Couch
- Empire Zoysia
- Queensland Blue Couch
- Sir Walter Buffalo
Do not use on Chewing’s Fescue or Ryegrass (annual or perennial).
Varietal differences in certain Couch & Hybrid Couch grasses may produce more pronounced effects and it is recommended that small areas be tested for turf safety before largescale application occurs. Avoid exceeding application rates through overlapping sprayed areas
What weeds does Metric Herbicide target;
- Crowsfoot grass (Eleusine indica)
- Winter grass (Poa Annua)
- Summer grass (Crabgrass) (Digitaria ciliaris)
The degree of control resulting from the application of Metric is primarily dependent upon weed species, weed size at application, environmental conditions, amount of Metric applied and growing conditions. Weed control is improved when ample soil moisture exists, and weeds are actively growing, rather than when the soil is dry and weeds are under stress from the lack of moisture. As with most herbicides, Metric will perform best on younger, actively growing weeds. Adequate soil moisture has been shown to play a role in achieving good control of target weeds
What is the Turf Tolerance with Metric Herbicide;
Following an application of Metric slight discolouration of the couch turf surface may be observed. At the label rate of 1L/Ha, any discolouration that may be observed will peak around one week after application and begin fading to disappear by three weeks after application. If the label rate is exceeded a greater level of discolouration can be expected.
Why choose Metric Herbicide;
- Contains the active ingredient Metribuzin.
- Exceptional performance in crowsfoot control.
- First Australian turf-registered metribuzin based herbicide.
- Superior control of large ‘difficult to kill’ crowsfoot plants.
- Low active ingredient output due to low use rate.
- Easy to use liquid formulation.
- Unique mode of action for crowsfoot control, ideal for combating resistance.

A season on from the first use of Metric and the crowsfoot problem I had has largely gone. I did have some initial collateral damage to the lawn at first but then landed on the mixing ratio of 1:800 when used in a backpack sprayer.
This year I’m just doing a little follow-up spot spraying and enjoying a much healthier lawn.

This is good advice for the kikuyu, but is 50% effective on crows foot. Next spray I will use 50th ratio. My observation was 5 weeks after spot spraying of crows foot.
22/3/2022 Spot sprayed using 100th ratio on crows foot.
25/4/2022 Half of crows foot died. The other half, the grass polls are 90% dead but have sent out new growth. Conclusion is mixture must be stronger, next time try 50%. No kikuyu was damaged which is good advice for Specialist Sales.

Product seems to be working well as per manufactures advice. Would like to see instructions for small lawns and spot spraying ( the rate per say 5 litres)
Service excellent

Hi Rob. Metric Herbicide is designed to be applied by boom spray application, hence the per hectare rate. There is a ‘rough’ conversion you can use to convert it to a knapsack. Add 1/100th of rate on weed table to 10L of water. Each 10L of mix will cover 100m2 (1/100th ha). eg. If the rate in the weed table is 1L use 10mLmetric/10Lwater/100m2.

This is extremely effective at knocking out Crowsfoot in lawns. The only problem is the directions only cover broad acre application so mixing ratios if using a backpack sprayer are a little hit and miss. Next time I’ll try 20ml per 10 litres of water as the first time it knocked out the turf too.

Hi Robert. Many of the specific turf herbicides are recommended to be applied via boom spray application to ensure even coverage of chemicals over a specific area. Even slight overdosing can see the damage of non-target species (ie turf) which is why spot spraying is not recommended. There is a simple conversion rate that can be applied from Boomspray to knapsack applications. Add 1/100th of rate on weed table to 10L of water. Each 10L of mix will cover 100m2 (1/100th ha). eg. If the rate in the weed table is 1L use 10mL/10L/100sqm water.
