Description

Flexolt Oral Lice Treatment For Sheep

Active Ingredient: Fluralaner @ 10g/L

Flexolt Oral Lice Treatment For Sheep is an orally administered lice treatment for sheep with any length of wool. Flexolt controls isoxazoline-susceptible lice (Bovicola ovis), including strains resistant to synthetic pyrethroids and insect growth regulators, on sheep and lambs with any length of wool.

Why choose Flexolt Oral Lice Treatment For Sheep;

  • It contains Fluralaner, a novel active ingredient with no known resistance in sheep lice populations.
  • An oral lice treatment for sheep and lambs.
  • Treats lice in any length of wool.
  • Allows flexible lice control timing.
  • A low-volume oral treatment.
  • Lambs can be treated at foot to ensure a complete program for the flock.
  • Unaffected by rainfall (as oral lice control is not affected by rain, so rain events don’t dictate treatment timing).
  • Sheep can be treated without cold weather exposure, common with dipping and jetting.
  • Treatment is not affected by poor shearing, which can impact external applications.
  • New sheep to the property can be treated off the truck regardless of wool length.
  • All sheep on the property can be treated simultaneously, regardless of differing wool lengths.
  • High Safety Margin (5x the maximum dose rate is well tolerated).
  • Safe for use in breeding rams and pregnant ewes (see precautions).
  • Safe in lambs from 6kg in body weight.

Flexolt Oral Lice Treatment For Sheep contains Fluralaner, which works systemically via oral administration. Fluralaner is a molecule from the isoxazoline family of chemicals and is a novel compound that has been shown to be highly efficacious against sheep body lice (Bovicola ovis). It works systemically to kill lice in sheep and lambs, no matter the length of wool.

Fluralaner enters the bloodstream and targets lice at the skin surface. Lice feeding at the skin layer both ingest and contact the active ingredient delivering fast-acting lice control. As a novel class of active ingredient for sheep lice control, there is no known resistance in sheep lice populations.

Flexolt was shown to be effective on a wide range of sheep across a large number of studies, including off-shears sheep, shorn sheep up to 7 days off-shears, unshorn lambs, sheep with short and long wool, and off-shears and long wool ewes with lambs at foot. Flexolt Oral Lice Treatment For Sheep is safe at 5x the maximum recommended dose rate (15 mg fluralaner per kg body weight) and safe for the treatment of young lambs as small as 6kg body weight. Lice control is not affected by rainfall before or after treatment.

Flexolt Oral Lice Treatment For Sheep lets farmers choose treatment times that work best for their property, helping manage labour challenges and environmental considerations.

Common alternative treatment times include;

  • Shearing Time – pre-shearing or off shears.
  • Pre-lambing – ensure no lambs are at foot by treating them before birth.
  • Crutching, Pre-Joining or Classing – whenever it suits the individual operation.

Critical Use Comments:

  • Administer orally using accurate drench equipment or syringes.
  • Do not mix treated sheep with untreated sheep.
  • Avoid treating ewes less than four (4) weeks before lambing commences or while ewes are lambing, as live lice can persist and infect the lambs.
  • Ewes and lambs can be treated together after lambing has finished.

Application:

  • Recommended to be applied with the Flexolt Oral (with marker) oral applicator.
  • This product is for oral application only, do not give topically or parenterally.
  • Flexolt is safe for use in breeding rams and pregnant and lactating ewes. However, safety in ewes during mating has not been established.
  • Check the accuracy of the applicator before and during the drenching procedure.
  • A representative sample of animals should be weighed before treatment.
  • Dose the mob to the heaviest animal by body weight in each group (ewes, wethers, rams, lambs).
  • Where there is a large variation in size within the group, the dose rate should be based on the label directions for each weight range.
  • Do not underdose.
  • Drafting into two or more lines may be appropriate to avoid excessive overdosing.
  • It is essential that every sheep is treated to achieve lice control – it is recommended that as sheep are treated, they are marked so any untreated sheep can be identified and treated.
  • Do not leave any sheep in the flock untreated.

Due to the lack of trial data to date, the manufacturers (Intervet) of Flexolt Oral Lice Treatment for Sheep do not currently recommend the concurrent use of Flexolt Oral Lice Treatment For Sheep with a drench. Trials are being undertaken on this claim. However, in the meantime, the advice is to leave 24 hours between a worming treatment (any product that explicitly targets worms) and the Flexolt treatment.

The best practice would have been to treat all the ewes 4 weeks before lambing with Flexolt to ensure they were completely clean when the first lambs were born. As suckling lambs are susceptible to getting infected with lice, it is pointless to treat the ewes now with Flexolt. The advice would be to treat the whole flock once the lightest lamb exceeds 6kg, probably around marking time.

Flexolt Oral Lice Treatment For Sheep is a short-acting, non-residual product. Flexolt Oral Lice Treatment For Sheep is safe to use on pregnant ewes. However, safety in ewes during mating has not been established. If possible, handling ewes late into the pregnancy and close to lambing should be avoided to avoid potential complications related to handling stress. Lice can spread from sheep to sheep through direct contact, such as when sheep are rubbing against each other or when lambs are suckling from their mothers. Lambs are particularly susceptible to sheep lice because they have thinner wool than adult sheep. This makes it easier for lice to crawl through their fleece and attach to their skin. Flexolt Oral Lice Treatment For Sheep is safe in lambs from 6kg in body weight. However, a pre-lambing treatment of the ewes may be favourably compared to treating ewes and lambs at foot (>6kg).
