Trimmit Growth Regulator (Hedges & Ornamentals) TRIMMIT Syngenta

Description

Trimmit Growth Regulator was discontinued by Syngenta in 2023

A similar or comparable product is Kult Plant Growth Regulator (Paclobutrazol)

Active Ingredient: Paclobutrazol 250g/L

Trimmit Growth Regulator is for the control of growth in ornamental & hedging plants.

Trimmit improves the appearance of hedges while cutting down labour costs, helping you keep your plants in shape for less.

Recent trials demonstrated a single application of Trimmit Growth Regulator reduces hedge regrowth by up to 90% leaving you with hedges that require less maintenance.  This is due to the regulator’s innovative mode of action, an early gibberellic acid inhibitor that suppresses the growth of terminal shoots for up to 12 months while encouraging the plant’s axillary buds to grow.  The result is not only denser, greener hedges that remain beautifully uniform for longer, but also healthier plants that can better withstand drought and other high-stress conditions.

Why choose Trimmit Growth Regulator:

  • Contains the active ingredient Paclobutrazol.
  • Better looking hedges.
  • Improved drought tolerance.
  • Improves hedge uniformity.
  • Reduction in required labour.
  • Less green waste for disposal.
  • Deeper, greener colour.
  • Economical application rates.
  • 1-Litre of Trimmit will treat up to 2000 plants when mixed at a low rate.
  • Less HSE requirements, eg. traffic control, ladders, trimmers.

What species can Trimmit Growth Regulator be used on:

  • Golden Duranta (Duranta repens)
  • Small leaf Photinia (Photinia glabra)
  • Syzygium (Syzygiumaustrale, Syzygium smithii)
  • Box (Buxus microphylla)
  • Viburnum
  • Viburnum spp
  • Mock Orange (Murraya paniculata)
  • Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides)

Trimmit Growth Regulator is a systemic growth regulator that reduces internode lengths of new shoots and causes the earlier formation of terminal buds.  The use of Trimmit should begin only when plants are nearing their optimum size, that is once the desired shape (height, width and foliar density) has already been achieved and the plant requires only maintenance thereafter. Responsiveness to this product can vary from site to site.

The active ingredient used in Trimmit Growth Regulator is Paclobutrazol (PBZ) which is a plant growth retardant and triazole fungicide.  It is a known antagonist of the plant hormone gibberellin.  It acts by inhibiting gibberellin biosynthesis, reducing internodial growth to give stouter stems & increasing root growth.

Situation: Ground cover species

Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides)

Application: Root Drench

Rate: 1.5 to 2.5mL in 1-Litre water per plant

Critical Comments:

  • Make applications in late winter to early spring, ideally at the commencement of a new season flush of growth.
  • Applications must cover the root system adjacent to the stem at ground level.
  • Remove mulch to ensure application reaches the soil.
  • Light post-application irrigation is recommended.
  • Do not apply to hedges less than 0.3 m or greater than 2 m in height
  • It is critical the apical growing points of the hedging plant be intact to act as sinks drawing the product into the plant at the time of application.
  • Therefore, do not prune until 4 to 6 weeks after application.
  • Do not allow plants to experience drought stress just prior to or just after application.
  • Do not make a repeat treatment within the following 12 months.
  • Do not apply to newly planted or recently transplanted plants.
  • It is strongly recommended the lower label rates be used when applying for the first time.
  • The higher rate can be used in the following years when the responsiveness is established.

Application: Root drench:

Uptake of Trimmit is most efficient when it is applied to the soil that receives adequate water and where there is a high density of feeder roots.

  • Apply the required amount of Trimmit in 1L water per plant.
  • Ensure all treated plants are lightly irrigated following treatment under dry conditions.
  • Individual trees or plants which are smaller than average should be left untreated or given a proportionally smaller dose of Trimmit.
  • Apply Trimmit as a root drench for consistent uptake.
  • Apply the required amount of Trimmit in 1 L of water per plant
  • Use on plants when they are close to their optimum size i.e. once the desired shape, height, width and foliar density has been achieved
  • Use the lower rate when applying for the first time.
  • If increased regulation is required, step up to the higher rate in the second year.
  • Rates start at 0.5 mL/plant to 2.5 mL/plant

Rates are a general guide only. Before opening, carefully read Trimmit Growth Regulator directions for use, precautionary and protection statements, storage and disposal, safety directions and first aid instructions.

Trimmit Growth Regulator was discontinued by Syngenta in 2023. A similar product is Kult Plant Growth Regulator (Paclobutrazol).

Trimmit Growth Regulator application should be repeated after 12 months if growth resumes. Japanese Box (Buxus microphylla) is on label for Trimmit however it is required to be applied as a root drench rather than foliar spray. Per the label, this means applications must cover the root system adjacent to the stem at ground level. There are a number of considerations which must be observed, please ensure you read the SDS and Label prior to purchase and use to confirm suitability for your situation. These are available under 'SDS and Technical' on the product page on our website.

The Trimmit Growth Regulator is only recommended to be applied to hedges between 0.3m and 2m in height.  1.5mL/1L for first-time applications and up to 2.5mL/1L is recommended for applications in following years.  The 1L of the mix is applied as a soil drench to the area of soil that covers the Viburnum root system.  Light irrigation of the soil after application will assist leach the chemical into the soil so the roots will draw it into the plant.

The use of the Trimmit Growth Regulator on Syzygium (Syzygiumaustrale, Syzygium smithii) to regulate growth is a popular option. Applications are recommended to be made from late winter to early spring, ideally at the commencement of a new season flush of growth. The application is via a root drench at 1.5mL to 2.5mL in 1L water per plant. You should not apply repeat applications within the following 12 months.

All instructions for use and application are listed on the product's directions for use label, available on the Specialist Sales website in the 'SDS & Technical' tab for each product. There are critical comments regarding the application that need to be understood and adhered to before application.

Trimmit Growth Regulator does not include Lomandra Longifolia or Poa Labillardieri as part of its registration of host plants controlled, so we can't guarantee effectiveness on these species.  Paclobutrazol is used as a growth regulator in many other products, but these are usually limited to trees and similar broadleaf species.  As Paclobutrazol inhibits gibberellin biosynthesis to reduce internodial growth, give stouter stems, and increase root growth, it might be worth a trial 'off-label' in an inconspicuous trial area.  We recommend speaking with Syngenta Australia on 1800 022 035 as they may be aware of 'off label' uses on Lomandra Longifolia & Poa Labillardieri.  The application of Trimmit is recommended in late winter to early spring, ideally at the commencement of a new season flush of growth.

Tips For Use

  • Trimmit is a systemic growth regulator that reduces internode lengths of new shoots and causes the earlier formation of terminal buds.
  • Use of Trimmit should begin only when plants are nearing their optimum size, that is once the desired shape (height, width and foliar density) has already been achieved and the plant requires only maintenance thereafter.
  • Responsiveness to this product can vary from site to site.
  • It is strongly recommended the lower rate be used when applying for the first time.
  • If increased regulation is required then step up to the higher rate in the second year.
  • If a plant is under stress, Trimmit should not be used.
  • Stress can be caused by moisture shortage due to lack of rain or inadequate irrigation, high temperature, salinity, moisture excess due to water table, flooding or inappropriate irrigation, severe or successive frosts, poor fertility caused by an imbalance of major or minor nutrients, diseases, insects, inappropriate herbicide use, mechanical damage.

Management:

  • Do not prune the hedging plant for 4 to 6 weeks after application.
  • Treated hedges should be kept well-watered with adequate nutrition.
  • Apply a repeat treatment after 12 months only when growth resumes
  • Plants should not have nutrition limited due to a lesser growth rate.
  • When replanting at least 2 years should have elapsed since the last application of Trimmit. Alternatively, if planting into an area that historically has been treated, fresh soil should be provided to allow plant establishment and growth.
  • A further alternative is to avoid original planting holes and place young plants as far as practicable from the treated soil (minimum 1.5 m).

Mixing

  • Mix the required volume of Trimmit with the recommended volume of water.
  • Maintain agitation to prevent settling.

Retreatment

  • In some cases, control of growth may persist for more than 1 year.
  • Retreat plants only when normal growth resumes.
  • Only retreat in the late winter or spring that follows the resumption of normal growth.
  • Use the interval between the first treatment and the resumption of normal growth as a guide for retreatment in subsequent seasons.

Compatibility

  • The compatibility of Trimmit with other products has not been established.
  • Always conduct a physical compatibility test and check for plant safety on a sample plant before making broader applications of mixes to hedging species.

Restraints:

  • Do not use on plants of low vigour or under stress (see General Instructions).
  • Do not apply to newly planted or recently transplanted hedging species or ground cover species, allow to establish and consolidate before applying for the first time.

Storage:

  • Store in the closed, original container in a cool, well-ventilated area.
  • Do not store for prolonged periods in direct sunlight.

Safety Directions:

  • Avoid contact with the eyes and skin.
  • After use and before eating, drinking or smoking, wash hands, arms and face thoroughly with soap and water.

First Aid:

  • If poisoning occurs contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre. Phone Australia 131 126.
  • For further information, refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
