Advion Fire Ant Bait

Advion is a fast-acting, granular indoxacarb fire ant bait, designed for complete fire ant colony control and elimination — including the queen, workers, and brood — in as little as 72 hours. Registered for both red imported fire ants (Queensland and New South Wales) and tropical fire ants (Northern Territory), Advion Fire Ant Bait is a critical tool for managing Australia’s most damaging, invasive ant pest.

Unlike contact insecticides that only kill ants on the surface, Advion’s non-repellent formulation is carried back to the nest by foraging worker ants and spread through the entire colony before the eradication process begins. A single application offers rapid knockdown of fire ants, and just two applications between 12 and 16 weeks apart can achieve year-long control. Suitable for use in and around homes, gardens, lawns, grazing areas, public spaces, and commercial sites, Advion is ideal for anyone dealing with a fire ant infestation and seeking a quick treatment option.

Advion Fire Ant Bait ADVION Syngenta

Description

How Advion Fire Ant Bait works and why it’s beneficial

Advion Fire Ant Bait relies on the active ingredient indoxacarb, present at 0.45g/kg. It works by blocking sodium channels in the ant’s nervous system, and utilises timing to its advantage. Indoxacarb is deliberately slow-acting enough that foraging workers don’t die before returning to the nest, but instead, carry bait granules back for the colony to convert solids into liquid nutrients. Indoxacarb doesn’t break down during the process, but in fact, becomes more potent as it is spread through the queen, larvae, and workers through food sharing. The result is colony-wide mortality.

This is the fundamental difference between Advion and contact insecticides. While a surface spray kills visible ants, the queen will simply produce more workers to replace them. Advion Fire Ant Bait eliminates the source. It also works faster than Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) baits, which take weeks to months and typically 3 to 4 retreatments to be completely effective. Advion can achieve colony eradication in as little as 72 hours with one application, and after the second application 12 to 16 weeks later, offers year-long control.

Applying Advion Fire Ant Bait

  • General application rates for Advion Fire Ant Bait are 1.7kg/ha (17g/100m2) for broadcast application, or 15g/mound for individual mound treatment.
  • It’s recommended to apply when ants are actively foraging, soil temperatures are above 20°C, and air temperatures are between 24°C and 32°C.
  • Morning applications tend to be most effective.
  • Do not apply if the area is currently wet with dew, irrigation, or rainfall. Rain within 2 to 3 hours after application may reduce effectiveness and require a repeat application within 7 days.
  • Always use fresh baits for best results, as ants are attracted to Advion’s oil content, which degrades once opened.
  • Do not apply more than 4 times per year, and always observe 12 to 16-week intervals between applications.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly does Advion Fire Ant Bait work?

Once Advion Fire Ant Bait has been applied, foraging worker activity will drop within 12 to 48 hours. Total colony control, including the queen and brood, typically occurs within 72 hours to 14 days, depending on colony size and density. Two applications 12 to 16 weeks apart can provide year-long control.

Can Advion be used as a red imported fire ant treatment?

Yes, Advion Fire Ant Bait can be used to control red imported fire ants — a major pest threatening parts of Queensland and New South Wales.

Do I apply the bait on top of the mound?

If applying directly to ant mounds rather than administering via broadcast application, distribute 15g of bait evenly around the mound within 1 metre of where ants enter and forage. Disturbing the mound by applying it on top will cause ants to relocate and reduce bait uptake.

Is Advion safe to use on lawns and around buildings?

Yes, Advion Fire Ant Bait is registered for use around buildings, gardens, grazing areas, lawns, and public areas (including commercial and industrial sites). To ensure safety, do not allow livestock or domestic animals to consume the bait directly.

Questions and answers from customers

Why is Advion Fire Ant Bait more expensive than the granular fipronil Ant product sold by Bunnings? What is the advantage?

    A

Advion Fire Ant Bait contains indoxacarb, a non-repellent active ingredient, in a highly palatable corn grit and oil bait matrix that is highly attractive to Red Imported and Tropical Fire Ant species, ensuring rapid product uptake. Worker ants that feed on Advion Fire Ant Bait return to the nest and transfer the non-repellent active ingredient (Indoxacarb) to the brood and queen. Total colony control can be achieved within 3-14 days, with worker activity significantly reduced within 48 hours. Granular Fipronil relies on contact only as it does not contain an attractant/bait, making it take longer to achieve colony control.

Tips For Use

Application Tips:

  • Applications can be made at any time but are most effective in the morning, when ants start to forage actively (soil temperature >15.5°C and air temperature between 24°C and 32°C).
  • No more than 4 applications should be applied per year.
  • For optimal effectiveness, use fresh bait and do not apply if the surface is wet with dew or irrigation is planned, or rainfall is forecast within 24-36 hours post-application.
  • If follow-up applications are required, make these at 12-16 weeks intervals.
  • Fire Ants often nest in open spaces close to other structures, and in colder months, these nests are more visible as they are prone from the surrounding ground level to access more sunlight for warmth.

Broadcast Treatments:

  • Baits may be laid using hand-held spreaders, devices attached to motor vehicles or aerial applications.
  • Ensure application with broadcast equipment capable of evenly applying 1.7 kg Advion Fire Ant Bait per ha (17gm/100m2).
  • Calibrate and adjust equipment before application to ensure that the proper rate of the product will be applied.
  • When applying in areas of significant vegetation, utilise application methods to maximise ground-level bait coverage.
  • Baiting in fruit, herbs, nuts, and vegetables may only be undertaken in situations where direct contact will not occur with the crop.
  • For crops grown at ground level, bait should only be applied to areas/soil that will not result in direct contact of bait with the crop.
  • In these circumstances, the application may be undertaken by placing bait on the soil between crop rows.
  • Application may NOT be broadcast over the top of crops.
  • In orchard/tree crops where fruit may be harvested from the ground (i.e. macadamias), the bait should not be broadcast under trees where it is likely to come into contact with fallen fruit that may be harvested for consumption.

Individual Mound Treatments:

  • Do not disturb the mound.
  • Do not apply to the tops of the mound.
  • Apply 4 level tablespoons (15 g) Advion Fire Ant Bait per mound, uniformly distributing the product about 1 m around the mound.

Restraints:

  • Do not apply if the area to be treated is wet with dew, irrigation or rainfall.
  • Do not apply directly to crop plants (excluding pastures).

Protection Of Livestock, Wildlife, Fish, Crustaceans And the Environment:

  • Very toxic to aquatic life.
  • Do not apply directly to water, waterways, or areas where rain may wash the product into aquatic environments.
  • Do not contaminate wetlands or watercourses with this product or used containers.
  • Do not use in areas where free-range poultry may consume the product.
  • Application to areas with no Fire Ants or low density of Fire Ants should be avoided to protect non-target ants.
  • If an application is necessary, use handheld spreaders.

Storage:

  • Store in the closed, original container in a dry, cool, well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight.

Safety Directions:

  • Wash hands after use.
