Producers use it at mulesing, at marking and after any flesh wound. The spray kills maggots, including strains resistant to organophosphates. It also carries an antiseptic and a scourable blue colouring. Therefore, treated sheep stay easy to identify in the mob.

How Extinosad Aerosol for Wounds works on struck sheep

Spinosad comes from a soil bacterium and acts on the insect nervous system. Because it works through a different mode of action, it still controls organophosphate-resistant blowflies. The chlorhexidine digluconate then supports the wound while it heals. As a result, one can covers both the strike and the dressing.

The aerosol needs no mixing, no measuring and no water. Staff simply clip the wool, shake the can and spray. A typical clipped flystrike wound of 200 cm² takes about six seconds to treat. So a marking or mulesing crew can work through a mob quickly.

The 'directions of use' for Extinosad Aerosol for Wounds do not indicate a retreatment period. However, Elanco technical support advised that Extinosad remains active for up to 8 days, and as there is nil withhold, it can be reapplied if required after this timeframe.

Unfortunately, there's no single definitive answer to how long it takes Spinosad (the active ingredient in Extinosad Aerosol For Wounds) to kill fly maggots after spraying. Spinosad is known for its relatively fast knockdown effect on insects, including fly maggots. In many cases, you can expect to see significant maggot mortality within a few hours to a day after spraying.

Extinosad Aerosol 370g does not repel flies but kills blowfly maggots laid in the animals' wounds. Extinosad treats and prevents blowfly-strike from infecting flesh wounds on the animal. The combination of Spinosad plus Chlorhexidine antiseptic allows wounds time to heal as blowfly maggots cannot remain viable.

Although the Exinosad Aerosol is only registered for use on sheep, we have customers who use the product to treat wounds in other animals (i.e. as a dehorning spray) with good results. With any off-label use, you might like to check with your vet before application.
