White oil insecticide, also known as horticultural or mineral oil insecticide, is a type of insecticide derived from petroleum oil. It primarily controls various plant pests, particularly in gardening and agriculture settings. The effectiveness of white oil depends on several factors:

  • Target Pests: White oil insecticide is generally effective against a wide range of soft-bodied insects such as aphids, mites, scales, and mealybugs. It smothers the pests and disrupts their cellular membranes, ultimately leading to their death.
  • Application: Proper application is crucial for its effectiveness. It must be applied thoroughly, covering both the upper and lower surfaces of leaves, where many insects tend to hide.
  • Stage of Insects: White oil is most effective against young nymphs and larvae, as they have a softer exoskeleton that is more susceptible to the smothering action of the oil.
  • Environmental Impact: White oil is generally considered less harmful to beneficial insects, birds, and mammals than some chemical insecticides. However, it can still impact non-target insects, so it’s important to use it judiciously and avoid applying it when beneficial insects like bees are active.
  • Residue: One advantage of white oil is that it tends to break down relatively quickly in the environment, leaving behind minimal residue on the treated plants.
  • Plant Compatibility: Some plants, particularly those with sensitive foliage or those that are drought-stressed, might be more prone to damage from the oil. Doing a small test application on a few leaves before treating the entire plant is recommended to ensure it doesn’t cause harm.
  • Effectiveness: While white oil can be effective against a range of pests, it might not be as effective against hard-shelled insects or insects that have adapted to oils through resistance.
  • Persistence: White oil insecticide has a short residual effect, meaning that it needs to come into direct contact with the insects to work. It’s not a long-lasting solution.

  1. Q Can White Oil be used as a carrier and sticker on cattle?
Asked by Graeme on December 4, 2023 9:28 pm
    Answered by the admin

White Oil Insecticide is only registered for plant use and not registered or recommended for animal use. We recommend AC Backrub Paraffin Oil as a carrier for a registered buffalo fly treatment on cattle.

  2. Is White Oil Insecticide compatible with Mavrik insecticide?

  3. Q Is White Oil Insecticide compatible with Mavrik insecticide?
Asked by anthony on July 27, 2023 11:27 am
    Answered by the admin

Neither White Oil Insecticide nor Mavrik Insetcide lists compatible products on the directions for use label. We advise not to mix Mavrik (TAU-fluvalinate) insecticide with white oil. The White Oil Insecticide is made from petroleum oil which can act as a solvent and dissolve the insecticide, making it less effective.

  4. Is there a use-by date on White Oil Insecticide?

White Oil Insecticide does not have a best-before or use-by date.  We recommend you try using it within approximately five years of manufacture.
