Questions and answers from customers

If I use Scrubba Herbicide on my horse paddocks, is it still safe for horses to graze, or do they need to be moved to another paddock? If so, for how long, please?

The best practice is that horses should not graze on paddocks treated with Scrubba Herbicide (Triclopyr & Picloram) until the herbicide completely dries. This usually takes around 24 hours under good drying conditions (warm, sunny weather). However, if you have any doubts, it's always better to err on the side of caution and keep horses off treated paddocks longer.

Asked by Rachel on March 19, 2024 7:13 am
    Answered by the admin

Scrubba Herbicide is registered to target broadleaf plants without harming pasture grasses when used as directed. As Wynn Cassia is classified as a pasture legume, no herbicides are registered to target it specifically. An 'off-label' application of Scrubba Herbicide, Metsulfuron Methyl, and Organosilicone Penetrant may be worth considering for this situation. A high water rate would be required to thoroughly soak all the plant's foliage.

Scrubba Herbicide is registered to control Bitterbark as a 'blanket wiper' application, mixing rate 1:4 (1 part Scrubba Herbicide to 4 parts water). It is not applied as a foliar spray. Access Herbicide and Garlon 600 are registered as a 'basal bark' or 'cut stump' application at a rate of 1:60 ( 1 part Access or Garlon to 60 parts diesel) to control Bitterbark. We cannot source data that suggests any particular method is better than the others. You would need to consider what application type best suits your situation. Always read the 'directions.

Scrubba Herbicide does not have an expiration or best-before date. The best practice with herbicides of this nature is to use them approximately five (5) years from the date of manufacture. Although the Scrubba you still have on hand is 11 years old, it may still have some efficacy. If the concentrated liquid has not changed in appearance or fallen out of formulation, you could mix a small quantity for trial purposes.

Tips For Use

Restraints:

  • Do not apply to weeds that may be stressed (not actively growing) due to prolonged periods of extreme cold, moisture stress (water-logged or drought-affected), poor nutrition, presence of disease, damage or previous herbicide treatment, as reduced levels of control may result.
  • Do not spray if rain is likely within one hour or if the foliage is wet from rain or dew.
  • Do not burn off, cut or clear blackberry or other woody weeds for at least six months after spraying.
  • Do not apply by aerial application in the wind over 15km/hr and air temperatures above 35°C.
  • In areas prone to flooding, treatment should commence after any annual flooding as such areas flooded within 9 months following application may have reduced results.
  • In Tasmania For Blackberry: Do not treat bushes carrying mature or near mature fruit.
  • For Native Vegetation: Use of Scrubba Herbicide on native vegetation must be done in accordance with State and/or Local legislation.

  • Follow any regional restrictions and all directions and restrictions on the label of any chemical mixed with Scrubba Herbicide (e.g. 2,4-D amine).

  • Picloram, one of the active constituents in this product, can remain in the soil for extended periods depending on soil type and application rate, rainfall, temperature, humidity, soil moisture and soil organic matter.
  • Do not apply under weather conditions or from spraying equipment that may cause spray drift onto nearby susceptible plants/crops, cropping lands, pastures, waterways or native vegetation.
  • Do not allow physical spray drift onto waterways, native vegetation and susceptible crops.
  • Do not apply close to or in areas containing roots of desirable vegetation, where the treated soil may be washed onto areas growing (or areas to be planted with) desirable plants.
  • Do not apply on sites where surface water from heavy rain can be expected to run off to areas containing or planted with susceptible crops or plants.
  • Do not move soil, which may have been treated to areas where desirable plants are to be grown.

Protection Of Livestock:

  • Poisonous plants may become more palatable after spraying, and stock should be kept away until they die.
  • Many plants remain poisonous after death, and stock should not be allowed access it, as there is a likelihood that they may graze the dead material. Such material should be burnt if possible.

Protection Of Wildlife, Fish, Crustaceans And the Environment:

  • Do not contaminate streams, rivers or watercourses with chemical or used containers.

Storage:

  • Store in the closed, original container in a cool, well-ventilated area.
