Directions Of Use

Seeding Rate:

  • General Rates: 500gm – 1.5kg per 100m2.
  • New Turf: 10 – 15 grams per square meter (1-1.5kg’s/100m2).
  • Overseeding: 5  – 10 grams per square meter (500gm – 1kg/100m2)

Establishment:

  • Late spring seeding is best suited to bermudagrass, with 16–18 degrees soil temperatures.
  • It is very important to use Agricote-coated seed and cover the Bermudagrass seeds with soil or sand (3 to 5 mm). Bare, open-to-the-air seed lying on the soil surface with no protection from wind or hot sun cannot be kept moist enough to germinate.
  • Ensure seeds are covered and well-watered to avoid drying out during germination and establishment.
  • As the plant establishes itself, watering intervals can be reduced to deeper, less frequent schedules.

Planting Tips:

  • Plant into a well-prepared firm seedbed.
  • Plant into soft topsoil or sandy loam.
  • Broadcast the seed at, or very near, the soil surface and incorporate lightly with raking (preferably a heavy rake).
  • Best coverage and reduced seed wastage are achieved by using a seed spreader for the size of the area.
  • Cover the seed with no more than 6mm of soil.
  • For best results, Maya should be planted in areas of full sunlight when soil temperatures reach 18°C and are rising.
  • Maintain adequate soil moisture around the seed using frequent but light irrigation (moist soil, but not waterlogged).
  • As a rule, warm-season species have their best period of growth when temperatures rise above 16ËšC.
  • During the grow-in phase, it is recommended to apply a starter fertiliser at the recommended rate after emergence and a complete fertiliser following each month of the growing season.

Tips For Use

Maintenance:

  • During the summer, you can mow your lawn quite low, but this puts a lot of stress on the plant.
  • Ideal mowing height is between 20–30 mm.
  • Mowing your lawn a little higher over winter helps protect against frosts.
  • Being a C4 grass makes selectively taking weeds out of Maya couch a breeze.
  • You should begin mowing the new stand approximately 3 to 4 weeks after emergence, depending on the conditions at the time of establishment.
  • Once the sod matures, the mowing height can be gradually reduced to a minimum of 1cm.
  • As the mowing height decreases, the required management level will be increased.
  • Summer conditions require mowing weekly, and in Winter, mowing every 2nd or 3rd week.
  • The management intensity level will determine the amount of nitrogen required monthly.
  • Sports turf installations should use the higher rate, while residential lawns may prefer the lower rate.

Fertilisation:

  • Maya should be fertilised 4–6 times per year for best performance.
  • In spring, a high N fertiliser can be used to encourage the couch out of winter dormancy.
  • A complete fertiliser can be used over the summer as required.
  • During March and again in early May, apply a fertiliser high in potassium.
  • This will protect your lawn as it goes into the cold winter months.
  • It should also be noted that in Autumn, when Maya is preparing for dormancy, additional potassium should be applied while significantly reducing nitrogen.
