Description
Distance Plus Ant Bait (Active Ingredient: Pyriproxyfen @ 5g/L)
Distance Plus Ant Bait, containing Pyriproxyfen, controls invasive and nuisance ants (including Red Imported Fire Ants) in domestic, commercial, environmental or agricultural situations. Distance Plus has the performance and safety profile to deliver ant control in almost any situation. Many ant products can reduce the ant population for a while, only for the problem to return. This is because they don’t always kill the queen, allowing more eggs to be produced and the colony to recover. Other ant products are limited as they cannot be used in sensitive areas due to their safety profile and action on non-target animals.Â
What ant species does Distance Plus Ant Bait target:
Distance Plus is registered to control nuisance and tramp ants, including;
- Red Imported Fire Ant (Solenopsis invicta)
- Tropical Fire Ant (Solenopsis geminata)
- Bigheaded Ant (Coastal Brown Ant) (Pheidole spp.)
- Yellow Crazy Ant (Anoplolepis gracilipes)
- Black Ants (Iridomyrmex and Ochetellus spp.)
- Singapore Ant (Monomorium destructor) and other Monomorium spp.
- Pony Ants (incl. Green Ants) (Rhytidoponera spp.)
- Meat Ants (Iridomyrmex spp.)
- Tyrant Ants (Iridomyrmex spp.)
- Green Tree Ants (Oecophylla smaragdina)
- Longlegged Ants (Paratrechina spp.)
- Sugar Ants (Camponotus spp.)
- Pennant Ants (Tetramorium spp.)
How does Distance Plus Ant Bait work:
Distance Plus Ant Bait is an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR), specifically a juvenile hormone mimic, similar to the naturally occurring insect growth hormones which control fertility, egg viability and pupation. Distance Plus breaks the reproductive life cycle of ants, eventually causing starvation of the colony through lack of replacement of foraging workers.Â
Ant workers pick up the bait granules and take them back to the colony or imbibe oil (containing the active ingredient) from the granules. Workers feed the solid bait to late instar larvae, which process the granules into liquid food, which is fed to the reproductive adults, workers and young larvae. Workers may also pass the collected oil directly to these other life stages. Due to the degeneration of reproductive organs, the queen ant (or ants) and subordinate reproductive females fail to lay viable eggs, and gradually, the worker population is reduced. The lack of worker replacement results in colony death as the existing worker ants age and die. Within three to four weeks, there is substantial colony mortality, and within eight weeks, the majority of the colony population has been eliminated.
Where can Distance Plus Ant Bait be used;
As Pyriproxifen, the active in Distance Plus Ant Bait, is an insect growth regulator, it has no impact on vertebrates. This great safety profile is one of the reasons Pyriproxyfen has an unscheduled poison classification. This allows it to be used in a wide range of domestic, commercial, environmental and agricultural situations. It is the only ant bait registered for use in cropping situations and can safely be used around livestock such as cattle, sheep, pigs and horses. Its low impact on non-target animals is a key reason for its use in the Government Ant Control Programs in Australia (National Fire Ant Eradication Program) for red imported fire ants and yellow crazy ants.
What is the application rate for Distance Plus Ant Bait:
Apply Distance Plus Ant Bait at 2kg-4kg per 10,000m2 (2gm-4gm per 100m2)
Distance Plus may take a little longer to work, but its unique mode of action targets the queen, ensuring the colony’s death.
