Description

Exiguard Buffalo Fly Insecticide

Active Ingredient: Chlorfenvinphos @ 200g/L

Similar or Comparable to Supona Buffalo Fly Insecticide (Zoetis)

Exiguard Buffalo Fly Insecticide is formulated to control Buffalo Fly (Haematobia irritans exigua) in Beef & Dairy Cattle.  Exiguard is specially formulated for application via cattle back rubbers and as an overspray for the control of Buffalo Fly.

What are the benefits of Exiguard Buffalo Fly Insecticide?

  • Contains the active ingredient Chlorfenvinphos.
  • Controls Buffalo Fly.
  • Registered for use with Beef & Dairy Cattle.
  • Nil Meat and Milk Withholding Periods.
  • It can be used in Backrubbers or as an Overspary.

It is generally considered that infestations of more than 200 flies per animal (100 per side) for beef cattle or 30 per dairy cow (15 per side) are necessary to reduce production. Fly infestations can vary significantly between animals, even in the same mob.

Chlorfenvinphos is a chemical insecticide that effectively controls buffalo flies on cattle. Buffalo flies are a significant pest for cattle in Australia and can cause significant economic losses through reduced weight gain, decreased milk production, and increased susceptibility to other diseases.  Chlorfenvinphos is a member of the organophosphate group of insecticides and works by inhibiting an enzyme in the nervous system of the buffalo fly, leading to paralysis and death. It is typically applied to the backs of cattle using an overspray spray or back rubber method.  It protects against buffalo flies for several weeks.

What impact does Buffalo Fly have on cattle;

The presence of buffalo flies on cattle can have several impacts. Female buffalo flies typically remain on their host, leaving only to lay eggs in dung pats. They frequently feed 10 to 40 times a day and can only survive for up to two days off their host. The life cycle, from egg to egg, takes under 14 days in hot and humid conditions but can take longer in cool weather.

Buffalo flies can travel up to 8 km in search of a host, and the movement of infested animals can spread the flies over longer distances between herds. Infestations can vary between cattle, with bulls and dark-coated cattle, particularly black cattle, carrying the largest fly burdens. Buffalo fly infestations can result in reduced weight gain, lower milk production, and obvious animal welfare impacts.

Some cattle are more sensitive to buffalo fly bites, and as few as 4 or 5 flies can cause intense irritation. This results in constant scratching and rubbing, leading to large sores on the animal’s neck and sides. Buffalo fly infestations can also reduce the value of the hide, particularly when sores have developed. In addition, some sores on cattle, particularly those found in the corner of their eyes or on their necks, are caused by the parasitic nematode Stephanofilaria stilesi. Buffalo flies between cattle transmit these nematodes.

    The length of time Exiguard Buffalo Fly Insecticide controls Buffalo Fly depends on the fly pressure.  In low-pressure times the length of protection is generally up to 21 days, but if the Buffalo Fly is particularly bad, then reapplication may need to be done again after 10-days (no sooner).  It is considered that infestations of more than 200 flies per animal (100 per side) for beef cattle or 30 per dairy cow (15 per side) are necessary to reduce production from the herd.  Fly infestations can vary significantly between animals, even in the same mob.
