Backrub - Self Feeding BACKRUB-SELF-FEEDING AC Backrubs

Description

Backrub – Self Feeding The AC Backrub – Self Feeding is a tool to apply a fly control solution to livestock. The AC Backrubs need to be pre-soaked with a fly control solution of your choice prior to use. They are not effective on their own. The AC Backrub is a  high-quality backrub suitable for cattle and horses.  They are manufactured from jute, continuous nylon braided netting and HD 6mm galvanised chain.  Stock will treat themselves on demand resulting in effective control of buffalo fly and saving labour costs.   Backrubs are available in 1, 2 & 3-metre self-feeding and plain designs. The Backrub uses a kink-resistant reinforced poly tubing to connect to a drum containing the oil/chemical mixture or organic solution. With the use of a tap on the drum, you can maintain continuous saturation without you needing to attend to it. There are two main fly control solution options:

  1. Chemical fly control plus backrub oil carrier solution
  2. Organic solution

The Backrub – Self Feeding allows the fly control solution to be applied to the cattle as they rub themselves against the backrub. It maximises effectiveness it is critical to set the back rub up correctly. The Backrub – Self Feeding will then allow cattle to treat themselves as they require. This is particularly important as some cattle appear to be more prone to fly infestations than others. By the cattle treating themselves on an “as needs basis” this will ensure fly populations are kept under control. Why Choose the AC Backrub?

  • No need to muster to re-treat your cattle
  • Reduces labour cost
  • Lets the cattle treat themselves on-demand in the paddock
  • Lower cost per animal treated
  • Easily accommodates fluctuating herd sizes
  • Easy to install and relocate
  • Capital outlay quickly recouped by maintaining cattle quality
  • Backrubs soak and feed an oil/chemical mix or organic solution.

    Stick to plain back rub

    Deb Granville

We purchased the self feeing backrub. The control tap is very basic and not easy to adjust to allow the dip per minute required. Stick to the plain backrub as the self feeding isn’t worth the extra money. The backrub itself is good.

Directions Of Use

Application – Self Feeding Backrubs

  1. Pre-soak backrub in a solution of AC Backrub Paraffin Oil and chemical or Cattle Coat in a container (ie Drum, tub, or bin) for at least 4 hours.
  2. Hang the backrub over the container to drain the excess solution for at least 10 hours.
  3. When re-bottling the excess solution strain through shade cloth to prevent blockage in the self-feeder mechanism (applicable to self-feeding backrubs only)

  • With the use of a tap on the drum you can maintain continuous saturation without you needing to attend to it.
  • During the summer months when fly infestation is at its worst, the tap should be opened enough to service the backrub at approx. 1 drop per minute. If the solution is dripping onto the ground, the tap is opened too much.
  • The highest point of the backrub should be approx. 1.5m from the ground.
  • The lowest point of the backrub should be approx 0.9m from the ground.
  • Backrub oil/chemical container should be approx 2m from the ground.

Questions and answers from customers

I have found near impossible to get the drip feeding method to work it appears to be either running on the ground or nothing at all. What size do you drill in the bottom of the drum where the tap is to go, I have 6.5mm (1/4”). Should I have drilled a smaller hole? Or is it better to simply charge the hose every week. I only have 25-30 Australian Lowline cattle.

Referring to the 'Directions Of Use" found on the product listing, the tap on the drum is how best to control the flow of oil.  The tap should be opened enough to service the backrub at approximately one (1) drop per minute during summer months when fly persistence is at its worst.  The tap is opened too much if the solution is dripping onto the ground.  Installing the back rub at the recommended heights will maximise the best results, i.e. the highest point should be approximately 1.5m from the ground, the lowest point should be about 0.9m in front of the ground, and the backrub oil/ chemical container should be approximately 2m from the ground.

Tips For Use

Mounting Self Feeding Backrubs:

  • The self feeding backrub uses a kink-resistant reinforced poly tubing to connect to a drum containing the oil/chemical mixture or organic solution. It is advised to strain the mixture to help prevent blockage in the self-feeder mechanism.
  • It is important to consider the position of your backrub in the paddock. It is recommended to hang it between two trees in a cattle camp or near a watering point. People often want to hang a backrub between a gateway, however, ideally you want the cattle to seek out the backrub not be forced to use it. By placing the backrub in a camp or near water, the cattle will find the backrub and gradually one by one begin to use it. Once the cattle work out that by using the backrub that they get relief from flies they will continue to use it as each individual animal requires.
  • Weaners and bullocks quickly learn to use the rubber, but breeders may be hesitant. It may take some time. A lick block or feed is one way to get them going to the rubber, and they soon learn what they are all about. Rubs should be put near water holes or shady camps where the livestock have full access to them.
