How does EquiDuo Liquid Horse Wormer work?

EquiDuo is an ivermectin-praziquantel wormer for horses, combining two active ingredients to deliver two complementary modes of action.

Ivermectin is a macrocyclic lactone that disrupts parasite nerve and muscle function, eventually causing paralysis and death. It provides broad-spectrum activity against roundworms, strongyles, bots, lungworms, pinworms, threadworms, and skin parasites.

Praziquantel works by damaging the outer skin of tapeworms, leading to paralysis and detachment from a horse’s gut wall. It effectively kills all three equine tapeworm species: Anoplocephala perfoliata, Anoplocephala magna, and Paranoplocephala mamillana (adults, immatures, heads, and segments).

Understanding chemical resistance when using EquiDuo

Though EquiDuo Liquid Horse Wormer is highly effective, it’s critical to note that minor resistance to ivermectin has been reported amongst small strongyles in Australia. However, this is not yet widespread.

To understand whether you’re encountering resistance, conduct an annual faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT). This will confirm whether ivermectin is still effective on your property and can be used to guide your worming rotation.

Importantly, EquiDuo is not a strategy in itself. It should always be used as part of a planned rotation that includes different chemical groups across the year. Alternating with a pyrantel- or moxidectin-based product sparingly (no more than once annually) can help to slow resistance development.

Directions Of Use

Dose Rate:

The recommended dose is 1mL Equiduo Liquid per 50kg live weight (equivalent to 200μg Ivermectin per kilogram live weight) and 1.5mg Praziquantel per kilogram live weight).
Equiduo can be given as an oral drench or by stomach tube (nasogastric intubation). Nasogastric intubation should only be done by a veterinarian or under veterinary supervision.

Administration by oral drench:

For administration by this method, an undiluted dose is usually preferred. Clear the horse’s mouth of any food material, elevate the horse’s head, and deposit the appropriate dose in the back of the mouth using a suitable dosing syringe. To avoid unnecessary coughing or the potential for material to enter the trachea and lungs, do not use excessive pressure, do not use a large dose volume of diluted Equiduo, and do not deposit the dose in the laryngeal area. Increased dose rejection may occur if the dose is deposited in the front of the mouth. Keep the horse’s head elevated and observe the horse to ensure the dose is swallowed.

Administration by stomach tube (gravity or positive flow):

Drenching horses by nasogastric intubation require specialised skills and knowledge. Special consideration should be given to the effects of potential for injury from handling, restraint and placement of the tube during administration by stomach tube. Nasogastric intubation should only be done by a veterinarian or under veterinary supervision. The recommended dose can be used diluted or undiluted up to approximately 40 times with clean tepid water. Use tepid water to flush any drug remaining in the tube into the horse’s stomach. Pour iO Equiduo into a graduated cylinder for dose measurement. Alternatively, use a calibrated dosing syringe inserted into the bottle to measure the appropriate dose. Use a clean, dry syringe if accessing the bottle to avoid contaminating the remaining product. Discard any unused diluted iO Equiduo suspension 24 hours after dilution.

EquiDuo Liquid Horse Wormer is not registered for use on dogs. EquiDuo is only registered for use on horses; we can only recommend using it for horses per the directions for use.

I am currently having a pinworm issue, and I have used two doses of Strategy T, four weeks apart. The horses are still scratching their butts, and EquiDuo Liquid Horse Wormer was recommended. I cannot find the information on how many doses are required for Pinworm control. One article suggested a dose every day for five days. Another suggested one dose only. Could you please let me know what the advice is for pinworms?

A single dose according to body weight will assist in the control of the susceptible population of pinworm. As the product label does not list the 5-dose strategy for application, we cannot recommend it be followed. Tips For Use

Develop a Regular Treatment Plan:

All horses should be subject to regular worming to maintain good health and peak condition. Particular attention should be given to young horses and mares. Foals should be treated initially at 6 to 8 weeks of age, and this treatment should be repeated regularly as required. The frequency of treatment should be assessed by each property’s veterinary adviser considering the number of horses, their age distribution, reproductive status, stocking rate, grazing access, climate and property’s parasite infestation status. Equiduo is highly effective in treating and controlling most types of equine helminths, including tapeworms, gastrointestinal, cutaneous and pulmonary nematodes and bots of horses of any age. With a regular treatment program, the chances of verminous arteritis and colic caused by S. vulgaris will be reduced.

Safety in Using:

Equiduo may be used both in young foals and very old animals. Mares may be treated at any stage of pregnancy, and fertility will not be affected in either sex.
Swelling and itching reactions after treatment with Equiduo have occurred in horses carrying heavy infections of neck threadworm microfilariae, Onchocerca sp. These reactions were most likely the result of microfilariae dying in large numbers. Symptomatic treatment may be advisable.
Healing of summer sores involving extensive tissue changes may require other therapy in conjunction with Equiduo. Reinfection and measures for its prevention should also be considered.
Do not use in animals other than horses
