What is the mode of action of Zolvix Plus for Sheep and Cattle

Amino-Acetonitrile Derivatives (AADs) have a completely unique mode of action compared to all other anthelmintics available on the market. Monepantel causes a paralysis of the worms by binding to a specific receptor that is only found in nematode parasites (roundworms). It is believed that the high margin of safety in sheep and cattle, and environmental safety of Zolvix Plus for Sheep and Cattle is attributable to the fact that the specific receptor for the AADs has not been found in any animal species other than nematodes. Abamectin causes paralysis and death of target organisms via the activation of a glutamate-gated chloride channel present in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells, and/or through the effect on gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors.

    Zolvix Plus Sheep Drench does have a withhold for milk. For sheep, this is; 'Do not use in ewes that are producing or may in the future produce milk that may be used or processed for human consumption', and for cattle, this is; 'Do not use in lactating cows or within 49 days of calving, where milk may be used or processed for human consumption'.

    Zolvix Plus Sheep Drench is only registered for use on Sheep. Specialist Sales is limited to providing advice based on the registered APVMA uses per the product's label. However, a veterinarian may be able to provide 'off-label' recommendations for use on animals other than Sheep.

  4. What length of time will Zolvix Plus Broad Spectrum Oral Sheep Drench be active in sheep?

  5. Q What length of time will Zolvix Plus Broad Spectrum Oral Sheep Drench be active in sheep?
    Asked by Petes Stewart on May 15, 2022 9:16 am
    Answered by the admin

     Zolvix Plus Broad Spectrum Oral Sheep Drench is a short-acting drench passed through the animal within a matter of days.  It does not provide long-acting residual control of internal parasites. Highly effective, short-acting drenches help avoid parasite resistance to the active ingredients being used.

    Elanco recommend you always administer Zolvix Plus in compliance with best practice;

    • Test and monitor drench efficacy regularly
    • Only use ‘fully effective’ drenches
    • Use combination drenches wherever possible
    • Only use long-acting products during high worm-risk conditions and in combination with a primer/exit drench
    • Quarantine drench all introduced/returning sheep with four active ingredients (including monepantel or derquantel)
    • Incorporate grazing management to create ‘low risk’ pastures
